Can orthokeratology lenses be worn in the morning?

Hello doctor, I previously got a pair of orthokeratology lenses for my myopia, but I feel that my eyes are very dry when I wear them to sleep.
Can I switch to wearing them during the day instead?

Qian, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/11

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello, Qian: No one wears them during the day (unless you sleep during the day and are active at night, in which case you can wear them during the day).
If you need to wear something during the day, contact lenses are recommended.
If your eyes are dry, you can apply some artificial tears in the morning for lubrication, which should help improve the condition.
The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Please note that online responses are for reference only; it is necessary to visit a medical facility for proper care.
I hope to have the opportunity to serve you.

Orthokeratology lenses, commonly referred to as ortho-k lenses, are specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses that are worn overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea. This reshaping allows individuals to see clearly during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses. However, your question about wearing ortho-k lenses during the day is quite relevant, especially considering your experience of dryness when wearing them overnight.

To address your question directly: While ortho-k lenses are primarily intended for overnight wear, some individuals do choose to wear them during the day. However, this is not the standard use for these lenses. The primary purpose of ortho-k is to provide clear vision during the day without the need for corrective eyewear, which is achieved through the overnight reshaping of the cornea. Wearing them during the day may not provide the same level of effectiveness in reshaping the cornea, and it may also lead to discomfort or dryness, as you have experienced.

If you are experiencing dryness while wearing ortho-k lenses overnight, it is essential to consider a few factors. First, ensure that you are using the appropriate lens care solutions and following the recommended hygiene practices. Dryness can sometimes be alleviated by using rewetting drops specifically designed for contact lenses. Additionally, it may be beneficial to consult with your eye care professional to assess the fit of your lenses and determine if they are suitable for your eyes.

If you find that wearing ortho-k lenses overnight is uncomfortable, you might want to discuss alternative options with your eye care provider. There are other types of contact lenses designed for daily wear that may be more comfortable for you. For instance, daily disposable lenses or soft contact lenses may provide a more comfortable experience during the day without the dryness you are currently experiencing.

Moreover, if you are considering switching to daytime wear for ortho-k lenses, it is crucial to consult with your eye care professional. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific eye health needs and vision correction goals. They may also suggest other vision correction options that could be more suitable for your lifestyle and comfort.

In summary, while it is technically possible to wear ortho-k lenses during the day, it is not their intended use, and doing so may not yield the desired results in terms of vision correction. If dryness and discomfort persist, it is essential to seek professional guidance to explore alternative options that may better suit your needs. Always prioritize your eye health and comfort when considering any changes to your vision correction routine.
