Eyelash inversion surgery
Today, I went to Cheng Kung University Hospital for a consultation.
The doctor asked whether I wanted to start with the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid.
I chose the upper eyelid, and he recommended CO2 laser surgery.
He mentioned that the procedure could take 10 to 20 minutes less time, is more precise, and results in less bleeding.
However, the cost is 5,000 NTD for one eye and 10,000 NTD for both eyes.
As a student, this is a bit of a financial burden for me.
I would like to ask the doctor for some advice: should I go with traditional surgery or the laser option? Are the results the same?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello Andy: The effects of traditional and laser treatments should be similar; the difference lies in the surgical duration and recovery time as discussed with the physician.
You may want to consider your own situation and discuss it further with the surgeon.
In Taiwan, the ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Online responses can only serve as a reference; it is still necessary to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility if needed.
I hope to have the opportunity to serve you.

More Info
When considering eyelash inversion surgery, the choice between traditional surgical methods and CO2 laser surgery is an important one, especially for a student on a budget. Both techniques aim to correct the condition where eyelashes grow inward, causing irritation and potential damage to the cornea. However, they differ in their approach, recovery time, precision, and cost.
Traditional Surgery vs. CO2 Laser Surgery
1. Technique and Precision: Traditional surgery typically involves the use of scalpels and sutures to reposition the eyelid and eyelashes. This method can be effective but may involve more trauma to the surrounding tissues. On the other hand, CO2 laser surgery uses a focused beam of light to precisely cut and vaporize tissue. This precision can lead to less bleeding and a more controlled surgical field, which may reduce the risk of complications.
2. Recovery Time: CO2 laser surgery often results in a quicker recovery time compared to traditional methods. The laser's precision minimizes damage to surrounding tissues, which can lead to less swelling and discomfort post-surgery. Patients may find that they can return to their normal activities sooner with laser surgery.
3. Cost Considerations: As you mentioned, the cost of CO2 laser surgery is higher, with a price tag of $5,000 per eye. For a student, this can be a significant financial burden. Traditional surgery may be less expensive, but it’s essential to weigh the potential benefits of quicker recovery and less postoperative discomfort against the cost.
4. Effectiveness: Both methods can be effective in treating eyelash inversion. The choice may depend on the specific characteristics of your condition, the surgeon's expertise, and your personal preferences. Some studies suggest that laser surgery may provide more consistent results due to its precision, but traditional methods have a long track record of success.
5. Risks and Complications: Both procedures carry risks, including infection, scarring, and changes in eyelid position. However, the risks may differ slightly due to the nature of the techniques. Laser surgery may have a lower risk of bleeding and scarring, while traditional surgery may have a higher risk of postoperative complications due to the more invasive nature of the technique.
Conclusion and Recommendations
Ultimately, the decision should be based on a thorough discussion with your ophthalmologist or surgeon. They can provide insights tailored to your specific case, including the severity of your eyelash inversion, your overall eye health, and your budget constraints. If cost is a significant concern, it may be worthwhile to explore financing options or payment plans that some clinics offer.
Additionally, consider seeking a second opinion if you feel uncertain about the recommended approach. It’s crucial to feel comfortable and confident in your decision, as the outcome can significantly impact your quality of life.
In summary, both traditional and CO2 laser surgeries have their pros and cons. The choice should be made based on a combination of factors, including effectiveness, recovery time, cost, and personal comfort with the procedure. Always prioritize a detailed discussion with your healthcare provider to ensure the best possible outcome for your eyelash inversion treatment.
