Nipple issues
I am 14 years old, male, and I have a hard area in the middle of my right nipple that hurts when pressed, but it doesn't hurt when not pressed.
Could it be cancer? Some people say it might be gynecomastia, while others say it's just part of puberty.
Will I die if I don't get it checked?
Ya Su, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/12
Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid
Dear Yasu: Gynecomastia is mostly seen in males and can sometimes present with tenderness similar to that experienced in females before menstruation.
This condition is often related to an imbalance of female hormones in the body.
It is advisable to reduce the intake of fried and high-fat foods, maintain a normal lifestyle, and monitor the situation.
If there is an increase in size or if symptoms persist, follow-up in an outpatient clinic is recommended.

Understanding breast and nipple issues in teenage boys can be a source of confusion and concern, especially during the tumultuous years of puberty. At 14 years old, it is not uncommon for boys to experience changes in their breast tissue, which can lead to discomfort or pain. The hard area you describe in your right nipple that hurts when pressed but is not painful otherwise could be attributed to several factors, most of which are benign and related to the normal physiological changes occurring during puberty.
During puberty, boys undergo a variety of hormonal changes, primarily driven by testosterone. However, there can also be fluctuations in estrogen levels, which can lead to the development of breast tissue, a condition known as gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males and can occur in one or both breasts. It is often temporary and resolves on its own as hormonal levels stabilize. The pain you are experiencing could be associated with this condition, as the breast tissue can become tender during development.
It is important to note that while gynecomastia is common and usually harmless, any persistent changes in breast tissue should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. The concern about breast cancer in males is valid but is extremely rare. The symptoms you describe, such as localized pain and hardness, are more indicative of gynecomastia rather than cancer, especially given your age. Breast cancer in males typically presents with a hard lump that is painless, and it is accompanied by other symptoms such as changes in the skin or nipple discharge.
Regarding your concerns about not getting checked, it is always a good idea to consult a healthcare provider if you have any worries about your health. They can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, recommend imaging studies like an ultrasound to assess the breast tissue further. Early evaluation can provide peace of mind and help rule out any serious conditions.
In terms of lifestyle factors, diet and exercise can play a role in overall health and body composition, which may indirectly affect breast tissue development. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is essential for healthy growth and development during adolescence. If you have concerns about your diet or weight, discussing these with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist can be beneficial.
In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing are likely related to normal developmental changes during puberty, it is essential to seek medical advice for a proper assessment. Gynecomastia is common in teenage boys and usually resolves with time, but any persistent or concerning symptoms warrant a professional evaluation. Remember, you are not alone in this experience, and many boys go through similar changes during their teenage years.
