Regarding whether bowel movements are normal?

Hello, doctor.
I have external hemorrhoids but have never been to a doctor, and I'm not sure if I have internal hemorrhoids.
I have not experienced any bleeding during bowel movements.
However, I have recently started paying attention to my bowel habits, and over the past few weeks, I have noticed that my stools are often the size of a fingertip.
There have been a few days when my stools were normal in shape and color, and some days they were normal but slightly thin.
Recently, I have consistently had bowel movements the size of a fingertip, which is making me quite worried.
I am concerned about the possibility of colorectal cancer.
Should I go to a major hospital for an examination?

Hello: Please pay attention to whether your fiber intake is too low.
Generally speaking, the risk of colorectal cancer is low for your age.
However, if you still have concerns, you can certainly consult a gastroenterologist.
Changhua Hospital cares about your health.

When it comes to understanding bowel movements and when to seek medical advice, it's essential to recognize the normal variations in stool size, shape, and frequency. The concerns you've raised about your bowel habits, particularly the size of your stools, are valid and warrant further discussion.

Firstly, it's important to note that normal bowel movements can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as diet, hydration, physical activity, and individual health conditions can all influence stool characteristics. Typically, normal stools are well-formed, can vary in size, and are usually brown in color due to the presence of bile. However, changes in stool size, such as consistently passing stools that are smaller than usual (like the size of a finger joint), can be concerning.

In your case, the fact that you have experienced variations in stool size, with some being normal and others being smaller, could be indicative of several factors. Smaller stools can sometimes be associated with a narrowing of the bowel, which can occur due to various reasons, including inflammation, strictures, or even tumors. While it is understandable to worry about conditions like colorectal cancer, especially given your concerns about the size of your stools, it is crucial to approach this situation with a balanced perspective.

Given your history of external hemorrhoids and the possibility of internal hemorrhoids, it's also worth considering that these conditions can affect bowel habits and stool characteristics. Hemorrhoids can lead to discomfort during bowel movements, which may cause you to alter your bowel habits unconsciously. However, the absence of blood in your stools is a positive sign, as rectal bleeding is often a more concerning symptom that warrants immediate medical attention.

That said, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation if you notice persistent changes in your bowel habits, especially if you are experiencing:
1. Consistently small stools: If your stools remain consistently smaller than usual over several days or weeks, this should be evaluated.

2. Changes in bowel habits: Any significant changes in frequency, consistency, or appearance of your stools should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

3. Accompanying symptoms: If you experience any additional symptoms such as abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, changes in appetite, or fatigue, these could be red flags that necessitate further investigation.

In your case, visiting a gastroenterologist or a primary care physician for a thorough evaluation would be a prudent step. They may recommend diagnostic tests such as a colonoscopy, which allows for direct visualization of the colon and rectum, and can help rule out any serious conditions, including colorectal cancer. Additionally, they may assess for other potential causes of your symptoms, such as dietary factors or gastrointestinal disorders.

In conclusion, while occasional variations in stool size and shape can be normal, persistent changes, especially those that cause concern, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Early detection and intervention are key in managing any potential health issues, so don't hesitate to seek the advice of a medical professional to ensure your peace of mind and health.
