A lump on the eyebrow that is painful and gradually moves?

Three days ago, I had a lump in the subcutaneous tissue under my left eyebrow, and it was painful unless I didn't touch it.
Now the lump has moved to my left forehead, and it is also painful unless I don't touch it.
Can you suggest how to relieve it and which type of doctor I should see?

More Info

Painful lumps above the eyebrow, particularly in the subcutaneous tissue, can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help in determining the appropriate treatment options. Given your description of the lump being painful without direct pressure, it is essential to consider several potential causes.

Possible Causes
1. Sebaceous Cyst: These are common, benign lumps that can form under the skin when a sebaceous gland becomes blocked. They are usually painless unless they become inflamed or infected.

2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacterial infection. It can lead to painful, red bumps that may feel tender to the touch.

3. Infection: Skin infections, such as cellulitis or abscesses, can cause localized swelling and pain. These conditions often require medical intervention, especially if there is redness, warmth, or fever.

4. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, an allergic reaction to products applied to the skin can cause localized swelling and tenderness.

5. Trauma or Injury: A previous injury to the area, even if minor, can lead to swelling and pain as the body responds to the injury.

6. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions like hives or eczema can also cause localized swelling and discomfort.

7. Lymphadenopathy: Swollen lymph nodes in response to infection or other systemic issues can sometimes present as lumps in the forehead area.

Recommended Actions
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given that the lump is painful and has changed location, it is advisable to see a healthcare professional. An Otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) or a Dermatologist would be appropriate choices, as they specialize in conditions affecting the skin and soft tissues of the head and neck.

2. Diagnostic Evaluation: The doctor may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, imaging studies like an ultrasound or CT scan to assess the lump further. This will help determine the exact nature of the lump and guide treatment.

3. Treatment Options: Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may vary:
- For Sebaceous Cysts: If inflamed, warm compresses can help reduce discomfort. In some cases, surgical removal may be necessary.

- For Folliculitis: Topical or oral antibiotics may be prescribed if a bacterial infection is present.

- For Allergic Reactions: Antihistamines or topical steroids may be recommended to reduce inflammation and discomfort.

- For Infections: Antibiotics or drainage of an abscess may be required.

4. Home Care: In the meantime, applying a warm compress to the area can help alleviate pain and reduce swelling. Avoid touching or squeezing the lump, as this can exacerbate inflammation or lead to infection.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in the lump, such as increased size, redness, or the development of fever, which would warrant immediate medical attention.

Conclusion
In summary, a painful lump above the eyebrow can have various underlying causes, and it is crucial to seek medical advice for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Consulting with a specialist will ensure that you receive the best care tailored to your specific condition. Remember to monitor your symptoms closely and avoid self-treatment unless advised by a healthcare professional.
