Is there a flashing type of floaters?
Hello Doctor, I have high myopia and also suffer from floaters.
Recently, I occasionally see a bit of flashing light, and I had a retinal examination yesterday.
The doctor said there were no tears or retinal detachment issues.
Is it normal to see a bit of flashing light? Because of this, I still feel anxious even after the examination.
Could you please clarify?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello NuuIM: Floaters are a result of vitreous degeneration, and if the retina is involved, there may be flashes of light.
If the examination shows no issues, there is no need to worry.

More Info
Seeing flashing lights in conjunction with floaters can be a concerning experience, especially for individuals with high myopia and a history of floaters. However, based on your description and the recent examination by your ophthalmologist, it appears that you may be experiencing a common phenomenon associated with the vitreous gel in the eye rather than a serious issue.
When you have floaters, which are tiny specks or strands that drift through your field of vision, they are often a result of changes in the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the eye. As we age or due to certain conditions like high myopia, the vitreous can begin to shrink and pull away from the retina. This process can lead to the sensation of seeing flashes of light, known as "photopsia." These flashes occur when the vitreous pulls on the retina, stimulating the light-sensitive cells and causing the perception of light.
In your case, since your retina has been examined and no tears or detachments were found, the flashes you are experiencing are likely benign. It is not uncommon for individuals with floaters to notice flashes, especially in low-light conditions or when transitioning from dark to bright environments. The fact that your ophthalmologist has reassured you that there are no retinal issues is a positive sign.
However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms. If the frequency or intensity of the flashes increases, or if you notice a sudden increase in floaters, a curtain-like shadow in your vision, or any other significant changes, you should seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a retinal tear or detachment, which require prompt treatment.
Regarding your anxiety about these symptoms, it is understandable. Many people experience heightened concern when they notice changes in their vision, especially with a background of myopia and floaters. It may help to remind yourself that the flashes you are seeing are a common occurrence and that your recent eye examination showed no signs of serious problems. If your anxiety persists, consider discussing it with your healthcare provider, who may suggest strategies to help manage your concerns.
In summary, while seeing flashes of light with floaters can be alarming, it is often a normal response to changes in the vitreous, especially in individuals with high myopia. Since your recent eye examination showed no retinal issues, it is likely that what you are experiencing is benign. However, continue to monitor your symptoms and maintain regular check-ups with your eye care professional to ensure your eye health remains stable.
