Hello, doctor?

Hello, doctor.
Recently, I've been experiencing frequent eye pain.
The pain mainly occurs in the area above the eyeball and below the eyebrow.
Sometimes, I also feel a tight sensation at the outer corner of my eye, and there is a tight feeling around the bridge of my nose (the area between my left and right eye).
My eye socket also hurts.
What could be wrong with me?

Yueyue, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/18

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Yueyue: This situation is usually due to eye fatigue.
Please make sure to rest more, and applying a warm compress to the eyes can also provide relief.

Eye pain can be a distressing experience, and understanding its potential causes and solutions is crucial for effective management. Based on the symptoms you've described—pain around the eyeball, particularly above the eyebrow, tightness at the bridge of the nose, and discomfort in the eye socket—there are several possible explanations.

Potential Causes of Eye Pain
1. Eye Strain (Asthenopia): Prolonged use of digital devices, reading, or focusing on close objects can lead to eye strain. This condition is characterized by discomfort in and around the eyes, often accompanied by headaches, blurred vision, and a feeling of heaviness in the eyes. Given your mention of discomfort around the eyebrows and tightness in the nose area, eye strain could be a significant factor.

2. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses can cause referred pain to the eyes. If you have accompanying symptoms like nasal congestion, facial pressure, or headaches, sinusitis might be the culprit. The sinuses are located near the eyes, and inflammation can lead to discomfort that feels like it originates from the eyes.

3. Tension Headaches: These headaches can cause pain around the eyes, forehead, and temples. Stress, poor posture, and eye strain can contribute to tension headaches, leading to a tight sensation around the eyes and forehead.

4. Dry Eye Syndrome: Insufficient tear production can lead to dryness and irritation, causing discomfort. Symptoms may include a gritty sensation, redness, and sometimes pain, particularly when blinking or focusing on screens.

5. Allergic Reactions: Allergies can lead to itchy, watery eyes and can also cause discomfort and swelling around the eyes. If you have a history of allergies, this could be a contributing factor.

6. Infections or Inflammation: Conditions such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye) can cause significant pain and discomfort. These conditions often present with additional symptoms like redness, discharge, or changes in vision.

Recommended Solutions
1. Rest and Breaks: If your symptoms are related to eye strain, taking regular breaks from screens or close work is essential. The 20-20-20 rule is a helpful guideline: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

2. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress over your closed eyes can help relieve tension and improve circulation, which may alleviate discomfort.

3. Hydration and Humidification: Ensure you are well-hydrated and consider using a humidifier in dry environments to combat dry eyes.

4. Artificial Tears: If dry eyes are suspected, over-the-counter artificial tears can provide relief. However, if they cause increased discomfort, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare professional.

5. Allergy Management: If allergies are suspected, antihistamines or allergy eye drops may help alleviate symptoms.

6. Consult an Eye Care Professional: Given the complexity of eye pain, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist or optometrist for a thorough examination. They can assess for underlying conditions and recommend appropriate treatments.

Conclusion
Eye pain can stem from various causes, including eye strain, sinus issues, tension headaches, dry eyes, and infections. Identifying the underlying cause is crucial for effective treatment. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is essential to ensure proper diagnosis and management. Remember, taking care of your eyes is vital for maintaining overall health and well-being.
