Right eye pain?
Hello Doctor: For the past couple of days, I have been experiencing a pain in my right eye when I close it or when I exert pressure while closing it.
There is also a slight pain when I gently press on it.
When my eye is open and not under pressure, I feel a mild dizziness around me, but it is not constant.
There is no redness, swelling, or bloodshot appearance; everything looks normal.
Since childhood, my intraocular pressure has been higher than normal when measured, and I have about -3.00 diopters of myopia.
One eye has astigmatism of 75 degrees while the other has none, but I can't remember which eye is which.
I wear glasses only during class or when I can't see well.
Sometimes, I inadvertently squint while looking at things, and my eyes tend to blink involuntarily.
My eyes often feel dry, likely due to excessive screen time on my phone and computer, which I am trying to monitor.
Thank you, Doctor!

Hello: The most common situation is eye fatigue.
Please take more breaks and avoid using your phone or computer for extended periods.
When you have the chance, applying a warm towel can also help alleviate the symptoms.
If the symptoms persist, please visit an ophthalmologist for an examination.
The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.

More Info
Experiencing pain in the right eye, especially when closing it or applying pressure, can be concerning. Given your symptoms, it is essential to consider several potential causes and when to seek medical attention.
Possible Causes of Right Eye Pain
1. Eye Strain (Asthenopia): Prolonged use of digital devices can lead to eye strain, characterized by discomfort, dryness, and fatigue. Symptoms may include pain, blurred vision, and headaches. If you have been using your phone or computer for extended periods, this could be a significant factor.
2. Dry Eye Syndrome: This condition occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Symptoms include a gritty sensation, burning, and pain, especially when blinking or focusing on screens.
3. Intraocular Pressure: Since you mentioned having a history of elevated eye pressure, it is crucial to monitor this. High intraocular pressure can lead to conditions like glaucoma, which may present with eye pain, headaches, and visual disturbances.
4. Corneal Abrasion or Infection: Although you noted no redness or swelling, a scratch on the cornea or an infection could cause localized pain. This would typically be accompanied by other symptoms like tearing or sensitivity to light.
5. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses can lead to referred pain in the eye area. If you have any nasal congestion or facial pressure, this could be a contributing factor.
6. Neurological Issues: Occasionally, eye pain can be related to neurological conditions, especially if accompanied by dizziness or other systemic symptoms.
When to Seek Medical Help
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention if:
- The pain persists or worsens over the next few days.
- You experience significant visual changes, such as blurriness or loss of vision.
- You develop additional symptoms like severe headaches, nausea, or vomiting.
- You notice any changes in the appearance of your eye, such as redness or swelling.
Recommendations
1. Limit Screen Time: Try to reduce the amount of time spent on screens. Implement the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
2. Use Artificial Tears: Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops can help alleviate dryness and discomfort.
3. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce strain on your eyes.
4. Regular Eye Exams: Given your history of elevated eye pressure and myopia, regular check-ups with an eye care professional are essential to monitor your eye health.
5. Consult an Eye Specialist: If symptoms persist, consult an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye examination. They can assess your intraocular pressure and check for any underlying conditions that may require treatment.
In conclusion, while some eye discomfort can be attributed to common causes like eye strain or dryness, your history of elevated eye pressure necessitates a cautious approach. Monitoring your symptoms and seeking timely medical advice will help ensure your eye health is maintained and any potential issues are addressed promptly.
