Pain in the left and right eyes?

Hello, doctor.
Since June 28, I have been experiencing pain in my left eye that radiates to the right and also causes discomfort when moving up and down, extending to my head.
What could this symptom indicate, and will it resolve on its own?

Hello, regarding your concerns: There are many potential causes for this issue, and an examination is necessary to determine the exact reason.
I recommend that you visit an ophthalmologist for a check-up.
In the meantime, allow your eyes to rest and see if there is any improvement.
Online responses can only serve as a reference; it is essential to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility if needed.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.
Best regards, Gao Pi-Lin.

More Info

Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing significant discomfort in your left eye, which is radiating pain to your head. Eye pain can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help determine whether you should seek medical attention.

Firstly, eye pain can be categorized into several types, including superficial pain (which may feel like a scratch or irritation) and deeper pain (which can feel like pressure or throbbing). The symptoms you describe—pain that extends to your head—could indicate a few potential issues.

1. Eye Strain: Prolonged use of digital devices, reading, or focusing on tasks can lead to eye strain, which may cause discomfort and headaches. This is often exacerbated by inadequate lighting or improper screen distance.

2. Infections or Inflammation: Conditions such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), uveitis, or keratitis can cause pain and discomfort. These conditions often come with additional symptoms like redness, discharge, or sensitivity to light.

3. Sinus Issues: Sometimes, sinus infections or sinusitis can cause referred pain to the eyes and head. If you have nasal congestion or facial pressure, this might be a contributing factor.

4. Migraine or Tension Headaches: Migraines can cause severe pain around the eyes and may be accompanied by visual disturbances. Tension headaches can also cause pain that radiates from the neck or shoulders to the head and eyes.

5. Glaucoma: Acute glaucoma can present with severe eye pain, headache, nausea, and vision changes. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.

Given that your symptoms have persisted since June 28, it is advisable to seek medical attention. While some mild cases of eye strain may resolve with rest and proper eye care, persistent pain, especially if it is worsening or accompanied by other symptoms (like vision changes, redness, or discharge), should not be ignored.

When to Seek Help
You should definitely see a healthcare professional if you experience any of the following:
- Severe or worsening pain: If the pain becomes unbearable or intensifies.

- Vision changes: Blurred vision, double vision, or sudden loss of vision.

- Redness or swelling: If your eye appears red or swollen, or if there is discharge.

- Sensitivity to light: Increased sensitivity to light can indicate a more serious condition.

- Headaches: If the pain radiates to your head and is accompanied by other symptoms like nausea or vomiting.

Self-Care Measures
While waiting for your appointment, consider the following self-care measures:
- Rest your eyes: Take regular breaks from screens and focus on distant objects.

- Use artificial tears: If dryness is a concern, over-the-counter artificial tears can help lubricate your eyes.

- Apply a warm compress: This can soothe discomfort and promote relaxation.

- Stay hydrated: Ensure you are drinking enough water, as dehydration can contribute to headaches.

In summary, while some minor eye discomfort may resolve on its own, persistent pain, especially when accompanied by other symptoms, warrants a visit to an eye care professional. Early intervention can prevent complications and ensure your eye health is maintained.
