Eye Pain: Causes and When to Seek Medical Attention - Ophthalmology

Frequent eye pain?

Hello, doctor.
I usually spend a lot of time on my phone and computer.
Since last year, whenever I'm outdoors in bright sunlight, my eyes start to hurt.
I also experience discomfort from the brightness when watching TV, using my computer, or looking at my phone, and I have photophobia.
Occasionally, I see a small bright spot in my vision, but this doesn't happen very often.
I have visited a general ophthalmology clinic, and the doctor diagnosed me with eye strain and tightness in the eye muscles.
Recently, I've been feeling pain behind my eyes, and I'm worried it might be retinal detachment.
Should I go to a larger hospital for further examination?

More Info

Eye pain can be a complex issue with various underlying causes, and it is essential to understand these causes to determine when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing symptoms related to prolonged screen time and exposure to bright light, which can lead to eye strain and discomfort.

Causes of Eye Pain
1. Eye Strain (Asthenopia): Prolonged use of digital devices like smartphones and computers can lead to eye strain. Symptoms include discomfort, fatigue, and pain in or around the eyes. This is often exacerbated by poor lighting, glare from screens, and inadequate breaks during prolonged screen time.

2. Dry Eye Syndrome: Spending long hours staring at screens can reduce the frequency of blinking, leading to dry eyes. This condition can cause a gritty sensation, discomfort, and even pain, especially when exposed to bright light.

3. Photophobia (Light Sensitivity): Your sensitivity to bright light may indicate photophobia, which can be caused by various factors, including dry eyes, migraines, or underlying eye conditions. This can lead to discomfort when exposed to sunlight or bright screens.

4. Muscle Tension: The muscles around the eyes can become tense from focusing on screens for extended periods. This tension can lead to pain, particularly at the back of the eyes.

5. Retinal Issues: While less common, conditions like retinal detachment can cause pain and visual disturbances, such as seeing flashes of light or floaters. If you experience sudden changes in vision or severe pain, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.

When to Seek Medical Attention
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional, especially if:
- You experience persistent or worsening pain.

- You notice changes in your vision, such as blurriness, flashes of light, or floaters.

- The pain is accompanied by other symptoms like headaches, nausea, or visual disturbances.

- You have a history of eye conditions or other health issues that may affect your vision.

Recommended Actions
1. Eye Examination: Since you have already visited an eye clinic and received a diagnosis of eye strain, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion from a specialist, particularly if your symptoms persist or worsen. An ophthalmologist can conduct a comprehensive examination to rule out any serious conditions.

2. Screen Time Management: Implement the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This can help reduce eye strain.

3. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to minimize glare on screens. Consider using blue light filters on your devices to reduce eye strain.

4. Artificial Tears: If dry eyes are a concern, using preservative-free artificial tears can help lubricate your eyes and alleviate discomfort.

5. Regular Breaks: Take regular breaks from screens and engage in activities that do not require close focus, such as walking outdoors.

6. Protective Eyewear: Consider wearing sunglasses with UV protection when outdoors to reduce discomfort from bright sunlight.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to eye strain and fatigue, it is essential to monitor your condition closely. If you notice any changes in your vision or if the pain persists, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation from an eye care professional. Your eye health is crucial, and timely intervention can prevent potential complications.
