Regarding the issue of coughing?
Hello, I have been coughing intermittently for almost two months.
Last month, the cough wasn't as severe, but in the past few days, I first developed a fever, and my headache felt explosive.
I have a cough, runny nose, overall weakness and body aches, lower back pain, dizziness, and my entire face is flushed.
The trachea below my neck feels a bit itchy.
The fever has subsided, but the other symptoms persist.
What could be the issue? Are there any foods I should avoid?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, it may be related to a secondary cold infection.
If there is no improvement, it is advisable to seek medical examination.
For cough, it is generally recommended to avoid cold foods, drink plenty of water, and temporarily limit the intake of citrus fruits and pears.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Hello! It sounds like you've been experiencing a challenging set of symptoms for the past couple of months. Persistent cough, especially when accompanied by fever, headache, body aches, and other systemic symptoms, can indicate a variety of underlying conditions. Given your recent history of fever and the other symptoms you've described, it’s important to consider several potential causes.
Firstly, your symptoms could be indicative of a viral respiratory infection, such as influenza or COVID-19, especially since you mentioned fever and systemic symptoms like body aches and fatigue. These infections often present with cough, sore throat, and nasal symptoms, and they can linger even after the acute phase has resolved. Additionally, post-viral cough is common and can persist for weeks after the initial infection has cleared.
Another possibility is that you could be experiencing bronchitis, which can be acute or chronic. Acute bronchitis often follows a viral infection and is characterized by a persistent cough that may produce mucus. Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, is a long-term condition often associated with smoking or long-term exposure to irritants, but it can also occur in non-smokers.
Given your symptoms of a scratchy throat and cough, it’s also worth considering allergies or post-nasal drip as contributing factors. Allergic rhinitis can lead to nasal congestion, which can cause mucus to drip down the back of the throat, triggering a cough. Environmental factors, such as exposure to allergens or irritants, could exacerbate this condition.
In terms of dietary considerations, while there are no specific foods that universally worsen cough, certain items may irritate your throat or exacerbate mucus production. For example, dairy products are often thought to thicken mucus for some individuals, although this varies from person to person. Spicy foods may help clear nasal passages but can also irritate a sore throat. It’s generally advisable to stay hydrated, consume warm fluids (like herbal teas or broths), and avoid irritants such as caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you.
Since your symptoms have persisted and evolved, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend diagnostic tests, such as a chest X-ray or a sputum culture, to rule out more serious conditions like pneumonia or other infections. If allergies are suspected, an allergist may conduct tests to identify specific triggers.
In summary, your persistent cough and accompanying symptoms could stem from a viral infection, bronchitis, or allergies. Monitoring your symptoms and seeking medical advice will help determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Remember to rest, stay hydrated, and avoid known irritants as you recover. If your symptoms worsen or new symptoms arise, please seek medical attention promptly.
