Can syphilis be cured?

I previously had oral sex with my ex-partner, and it was three months after our breakup that I had oral sex again.
Why did I not contract syphilis earlier, but only during the most recent encounter?
Can syphilis be cured? Even if it is cured, can it still be transmitted to others through oral sex? If blood tests show that I am cured, do I still have the potential to be infectious? Importantly, will my symptoms eventually recur? If blood tests show no signs of the infection, can it still come back?

Xiao En, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/25

Due to the current openness regarding sexual attitudes, engaging in unsafe sexual practices increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
It is recommended that individuals who have been exposed seek medical attention for STI screening.
If an infection is confirmed, complete treatment should be undertaken, along with regular follow-up.
Additionally, sexual partners should also be tested.

Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, is indeed curable, particularly in its early stages. The standard treatment for syphilis is a course of antibiotics, usually penicillin, which is highly effective. If treated early, individuals can expect a complete resolution of the infection and its symptoms. However, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider to ensure that the treatment has been effective, typically through blood tests that check for the presence of antibodies related to syphilis.

Regarding your question about transmission, syphilis is primarily spread through direct contact with syphilitic sores, which can occur during oral, anal, or vaginal sex. If you had oral sex with a partner who had syphilis, it is possible to contract the infection if they had sores present in their mouth or genital area. The fact that you did not contract syphilis during your previous encounters does not guarantee immunity; it simply means that the infection was not present in your partner at that time.

Once treated, syphilis is no longer contagious. If your blood tests show that the infection has been successfully treated (i.e., the antibodies are no longer present), you cannot transmit the infection to others. However, it is essential to note that even after successful treatment, individuals can be re-infected if they are exposed to the bacteria again. Therefore, practicing safe sex, including the use of condoms and dental dams, is crucial to prevent future infections.

As for the recurrence of symptoms, it is important to differentiate between a recurrence of syphilis and the possibility of being re-infected. Once treated, the symptoms of syphilis should not return unless you are exposed to the bacteria again. If you experience symptoms that resemble those of syphilis after treatment, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider, as these could indicate a new infection or another health issue.

In summary, syphilis can be cured with appropriate antibiotic treatment, and once cured, you are not contagious. However, you can become re-infected if exposed again. Regular testing and open communication with sexual partners about STI statuses are vital components of sexual health. If you have concerns about your sexual health or potential symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.
