Are you pregnant?

The last two menstrual periods were on February 5 and March 3.
Engaged in sexual activity on February 14 (during the fertile window) while soaking in a hot spring without protection, but there was no full penetration or ejaculation.
This week (March 21-25), I started feeling discomfort in my abdomen, sometimes experiencing pain in the lower left and sometimes in the lower right, along with overall lower back soreness.
My appetite is good, and I have not experienced nausea or frequent urination.
I would like to know if there is a possibility of pregnancy or if the discomfort is due to regularly lifting children at work, which may have caused the abdominal discomfort, or if it could be related to pregnancy.

Fiona, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/25

Hello, the questioner: There is a possibility of pregnancy even without ejaculation during intercourse, as pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm.
Additionally, early pregnancy may not present specific symptoms, and subjective symptoms cannot be used to make a determination.
It is recommended to check for pregnancy if your period is more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

When considering the possibility of pregnancy, it's essential to understand the various symptoms and concerns that can arise. Based on your description, you had unprotected sexual intercourse during your fertile window, which does increase the likelihood of conception. However, the symptoms you are experiencing—abdominal discomfort, lower back pain, and a good appetite without nausea or frequent urination—can be attributed to several factors, not just pregnancy.

Firstly, abdominal pain can occur for various reasons, including ovulation, menstrual cramps, or even muscle strain from physical activities like lifting children. Since you mentioned that you work with children and may be lifting them frequently, it's plausible that your discomfort could be related to physical exertion rather than pregnancy.
In terms of pregnancy symptoms, many women experience a range of signs, including nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, and changes in appetite. However, not all women will exhibit these symptoms, especially in the early stages of pregnancy. Some women may not experience any symptoms at all during the first few weeks. The absence of nausea and frequent urination does not rule out pregnancy, but it also does not confirm it.

If you suspect you might be pregnant, the most reliable way to determine this is through a home pregnancy test. These tests measure the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate results, it's best to take the test after your missed period.

If the test is positive, or if you continue to experience discomfort, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than a urine test, and can also evaluate your abdominal pain to rule out any other potential issues.

Additionally, if you find yourself feeling anxious or concerned about the possibility of pregnancy or the symptoms you're experiencing, it's important to talk about these feelings. Anxiety can exacerbate physical symptoms, and discussing your concerns with a healthcare professional can provide clarity and reassurance.

In summary, while your symptoms could potentially indicate pregnancy, they could also be related to other factors such as physical strain or stress. A home pregnancy test and a consultation with a healthcare provider will give you the best insight into your situation. Remember, it's completely normal to feel anxious during this time, and seeking support can help you navigate your feelings and any potential outcomes.
