Pain after hernia surgery is common?
I would like to ask if it is normal to experience unexplained sharp pain at the surgical site 18 days after my hernia surgery, which involved a mesh implant.
Additionally, I have noticed swelling around the area near the incision.
What could be the cause of this? Also, I have developed a urinary tract infection after the surgery.

Hello: If you are still experiencing pain 18 days post-surgery, you can apply a warm compress and take pain relievers as needed.
Be sure to drink plenty of water.
If you have a urinary tract infection and the symptoms are severe, you should consult a urologist.

Experiencing discomfort and pain after hernia surgery, especially at the 18-day mark, can be a common occurrence. It is important to understand that while minimally invasive surgeries, such as laparoscopic hernia repair, tend to result in less postoperative pain compared to traditional open surgeries, some level of discomfort is still expected.
Post-surgical pain can arise from several factors. First, the body undergoes a healing process after surgery, which can involve inflammation and tissue repair. This healing process can manifest as pain or discomfort around the surgical site. The pain you describe as "抽痛" (sharp pain) may be due to nerve irritation or the healing of tissues around the surgical area.
Additionally, the presence of swelling or a feeling of tightness in the area you mentioned could be attributed to postoperative edema, which is a common response to surgery. This swelling can sometimes feel firm or hard to the touch, and it may take several weeks to resolve completely. If the swelling is significant or accompanied by other symptoms such as redness, warmth, or discharge from the incision site, it may indicate an infection or other complications that would require medical attention.
Regarding your urinary tract infection (UTI) following surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience urinary issues after hernia repair, particularly if the surgery involved manipulation of the tissues near the bladder or urethra. UTIs can cause discomfort and may exacerbate feelings of pain in the lower abdomen or groin area. It is crucial to address any urinary symptoms with your healthcare provider, as they may require treatment with antibiotics.
In summary, while some discomfort and pain can be normal after hernia surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain becomes severe, if you notice any signs of infection, or if the swelling does not improve, you should reach out to your surgeon or healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can assess your condition, provide appropriate pain management strategies, and ensure that your recovery is on track.
In the meantime, consider gentle activities and follow any postoperative care instructions provided by your surgeon. Adequate rest, hydration, and possibly the use of over-the-counter pain relief (as advised by your doctor) can help manage discomfort during your recovery. Remember, every patient's recovery is unique, and factors such as age, overall health, and the extent of the surgery can influence the healing process.
