Post-operative wounds after rubber band ligation for hemorrhoids?

Hello, doctor.
A few weeks ago, I had two internal hemorrhoids removed using the rubber band ligation method on different weeks.
However, there are still two hard areas inside the anus (where the hemorrhoids were previously ligated).
I'm wondering what these might be.
If they are wounds, how long will it take for these hard areas to disappear? Are there any methods (diet? ointments?) that can help these areas heal faster? Thank you for your assistance.

Jack, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/26

Just like scars that remain after an injury, there will also be healing wounds and scab tissue after a vasectomy.
Generally, these will disappear in about 2 to 4 weeks.
Avoiding constipation and using topical ointments can be helpful.
It is recommended not to constantly touch the wound; as long as there is no pain or discomfort, there should be no issue.

After undergoing band ligation for internal hemorrhoids, it is common to experience some hard areas in the anal region where the ligation was performed. These hard areas are typically a result of the healing process, as the tissue around the ligated hemorrhoids undergoes changes during recovery. The ligation itself causes the hemorrhoids to shrink and eventually fall off, but the surrounding tissue may remain firm or swollen for some time as it heals.

Understanding the Healing Process
1. Healing Timeline: The hard areas you are feeling are likely scar tissue or residual swelling from the procedure. Generally, it can take several weeks to a few months for the tissue to soften and return to normal. The exact duration can vary based on individual healing rates, the extent of the procedure, and overall health.

2. Signs of Normal Healing: It is important to monitor the hard areas for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge. If these symptoms occur, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider.

Tips for Promoting Healing
1. Dietary Adjustments: A high-fiber diet is essential for promoting bowel regularity and preventing straining during bowel movements, which can exacerbate discomfort and delay healing. Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes into your diet. Staying well-hydrated is equally important, as it helps soften stool.

2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter creams or ointments designed for hemorrhoid relief can help alleviate discomfort and promote healing. Look for products containing hydrocortisone or witch hazel, which can reduce inflammation and soothe the area.

3. Warm Sitz Baths: Taking warm sitz baths can provide relief and promote blood flow to the area, which may help with healing. Soaking for 10-15 minutes several times a day can be beneficial.

4. Avoid Straining: It is crucial to avoid straining during bowel movements, as this can put pressure on the healing tissue and lead to complications. If you are experiencing constipation, consider using a stool softener or a gentle laxative after consulting with your healthcare provider.

5. Gentle Hygiene Practices: After bowel movements, gently clean the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh wipes or excessive scrubbing, as this can irritate the sensitive tissue.

6. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider are important to monitor your recovery. If the hard areas persist beyond a few months or if you experience significant pain, it is advisable to seek further evaluation.

Conclusion
In summary, the hard areas you are experiencing post-band ligation are likely part of the normal healing process. By maintaining a healthy diet, using topical treatments, and practicing good hygiene, you can support your recovery. If you have any concerns or if the hard areas do not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. Healing takes time, and being proactive about your care can lead to a smoother recovery.
