Taking Le Xia tablets during pregnancy?

Hello, I am currently 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant.
However, I have a long history of chronic constipation prior to pregnancy, and I have developed a habit of using "Laxative Tablets" for almost 8 years, taking 6 tablets daily.
I was still taking them until yesterday, and I am concerned about whether this will affect the fetus.
I feel very uncomfortable if I do not have a bowel movement in a day.
I have tried increasing my intake of fruits and vegetables and drinking more water, but it has not been effective.
Can I still use Laxative Tablets to relieve constipation?

When it comes to using laxatives during pregnancy, it is crucial to approach the situation with caution and informed decision-making. As you are currently five weeks and five days pregnant and have a history of chronic constipation, it’s understandable that you are concerned about the safety of continuing your laxative use, particularly with a product like "Laxative Tablets" (樂下錠), which you have been using for eight years.

Firstly, it’s important to note that constipation is a common issue during pregnancy due to hormonal changes, increased pressure from the growing uterus, and dietary changes. Many pregnant women experience this discomfort, and it can lead to significant distress if not managed properly. However, the choice of laxative is critical, as not all laxatives are safe for use during pregnancy.

Laxatives can be classified into several categories: bulk-forming laxatives, osmotic laxatives, stimulant laxatives, and stool softeners. Generally, bulk-forming laxatives (like psyllium husk) and stool softeners (like docusate sodium) are considered safe during pregnancy. They work by increasing the bulk of the stool and making it easier to pass without stimulating the bowel excessively.

On the other hand, stimulant laxatives, which may include certain types of laxative tablets, can cause the intestines to contract more forcefully. This can potentially lead to complications such as cramping or diarrhea, which may not be ideal during pregnancy. The safety of stimulant laxatives during pregnancy is less well-established, and they are often not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

Given your long-term use of laxatives and the fact that you have been taking a high dosage (six tablets daily), it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider before continuing this regimen. Your doctor can help assess your specific situation, including the type of laxative you are using, and may recommend safer alternatives or lifestyle changes that can help alleviate constipation without the need for medication.

In addition to consulting your doctor, here are some general recommendations for managing constipation during pregnancy:
1. Dietary Changes: Increase your intake of fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Foods like prunes and bran cereals are particularly effective.

2. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Staying well-hydrated can help soften the stool and promote regular bowel movements.

3. Physical Activity: Engage in regular, moderate exercise, as this can stimulate bowel function. Activities like walking or prenatal yoga can be beneficial.

4. Routine: Establish a regular bathroom routine, allowing yourself time to relax and not rush the process.

5. Probiotics: Consider incorporating probiotics into your diet, as they can promote gut health and improve digestion.

In summary, while managing constipation during pregnancy is essential for your comfort and health, the use of laxatives should be approached with caution. It is best to consult with your healthcare provider to determine the safest and most effective options for your specific situation. They can provide personalized advice and may suggest alternative methods to help relieve your constipation without compromising your pregnancy.
