Weight increased by five kilograms within a week?

Hello, as mentioned, I weighed 49 kg on the night of March 27 and 54 kg on March 31.
I haven't been overeating these past few days.
The only unusual thing is that last night, I suddenly developed a small bump on my lower lip that resembled a blister and had a slight itching sensation, but it has mostly returned to normal today.
Additionally, my left eyelid has been twitching continuously for about two days.
Could you please tell me what might be happening with my body? I found online that it could possibly be related to thyroid issues, so I am inquiring here.
Thank you very much.

SS, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/31

Dr. Xie Rongyuan reply Internal Medicine

Hello: If you have gained 5 kilograms in weight within four days, you should promptly go to the hospital for an examination to determine if it is due to nephrotic syndrome causing systemic edema.
Thank you for your message!

More Info

Sudden weight gain can be concerning, especially when it occurs without significant changes in diet or lifestyle. In your case, gaining 5 kilograms in just a few days is quite unusual and warrants further investigation. While you mentioned that you have not changed your eating habits significantly, there are several potential underlying causes for this sudden weight gain, including thyroid issues, fluid retention, hormonal changes, and other medical conditions.

Thyroid Issues
The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, and both hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can lead to weight changes. In your case, the sudden weight gain could suggest hypothyroidism, where the body’s metabolism slows down, leading to weight gain despite normal or reduced caloric intake. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation, and dry skin. Conversely, hyperthyroidism typically causes weight loss, increased appetite, and symptoms like anxiety, palpitations, and heat intolerance.

Fluid Retention
Another common cause of sudden weight gain is fluid retention, which can occur due to various factors, including dietary changes (increased salt intake), hormonal fluctuations (such as during menstruation), or certain medications. Conditions like heart failure, kidney disease, or liver dysfunction can also lead to significant fluid retention, resulting in rapid weight gain. Given that you experienced a sudden change in your body, it would be wise to monitor for other symptoms such as swelling in the legs, shortness of breath, or changes in urination.

Hormonal Changes
Hormonal fluctuations can also contribute to weight changes. For instance, conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to weight gain, irregular menstrual cycles, and other symptoms. If your menstrual cycle has been irregular or absent, this could be a sign of hormonal imbalance that should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Other Medical Conditions
Other potential causes of sudden weight gain include stress and anxiety, which can lead to changes in eating habits or hormonal responses that promote weight gain. Additionally, certain medications, particularly those used for mental health conditions, can have side effects that include weight gain.

Symptoms to Monitor
You mentioned experiencing a bump on your lip and twitching of your eyelid. While these symptoms may not directly relate to weight gain, they could indicate stress or anxiety, which can also affect your overall health and weight. If the lip bump persists or worsens, or if the eyelid twitching continues, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.

Recommendations
Given the complexity of your symptoms and the rapid weight gain, I recommend the following steps:
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It's essential to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare professional who can perform a thorough evaluation, including blood tests to check thyroid function (TSH, Free T4, and Free T3 levels) and assess for other potential causes of weight gain.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may arise, such as changes in energy levels, mood, menstrual cycle, or any new physical symptoms.

3. Lifestyle Considerations: While waiting for your appointment, consider maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and managing stress through relaxation techniques or physical activity.

4. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it’s helpful to research potential causes, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary anxiety. Rely on professional medical advice for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

In conclusion, sudden weight gain can stem from various factors, including thyroid issues, fluid retention, hormonal changes, and other medical conditions. A comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare provider is crucial to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
