Suspected balanitis, which keeps recurring?
Hello, I engaged in oral sexual activity with someone around early December (the other person performed oral sex on me).
In mid-December, while on a business trip to South Korea, I noticed a red spot on my glans, which was not painful or itchy, and it was flat.
It disappeared after about 3 to 4 days.
Now, in early February, another red spot has appeared, with slight itching.
Due to my anxiety, I consulted a doctor for a visual examination.
The doctor diagnosed me with candidal balanitis and prescribed topical medication.
However, I have been applying the medication only to the affected area, and while one spot improves, another begins to itch and develop a red spot.
Could this be due to improper self-care and hygiene, or is there another underlying issue?

There are no answers that can guarantee results, nor can they alleviate your anxiety.
If you have concerns and have engaged in risky sexual behavior, it is advisable to see a urologist for blood tests and follow-up.

More Info
Recurring red spots on the glans can be concerning, especially after experiencing symptoms that seem to come and go. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be dealing with a case of candidal balanitis, which is a yeast infection of the glans (the head of the penis). This condition can be caused by several factors, including poor hygiene, moisture retention, and sexual activity, particularly if there is a history of oral or genital contact with an infected partner.
Possible Causes
1. Candidal Infection: As your doctor mentioned, a yeast infection can cause red spots or rashes on the glans. This is often characterized by itching, irritation, and sometimes a discharge. The fact that you have experienced these symptoms intermittently suggests that the infection may not have been fully resolved or that there is a recurring issue.
2. Hygiene Practices: Inadequate hygiene can lead to the accumulation of moisture and bacteria, which can exacerbate fungal infections. It’s essential to keep the area clean and dry. After washing, ensure that the area is thoroughly dried, as moisture can promote fungal growth.
3. Sexual Activity: Engaging in sexual activities, especially oral sex, can introduce bacteria or fungi to the area. If your partner has a yeast infection or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), this can lead to recurrent symptoms.
4. Skin Conditions: Other dermatological conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, can also cause red spots on the glans. These conditions may require different treatment approaches.
5. Underlying Health Issues: Conditions such as diabetes can predispose individuals to fungal infections due to elevated sugar levels in bodily fluids, which can promote yeast growth.
Care and Management
1. Medication Compliance: It’s crucial to follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the application of antifungal creams or medications. If you notice that the symptoms persist despite treatment, it may be necessary to revisit your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
2. Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene by washing the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that can irritate the sensitive skin of the glans. After washing, ensure the area is completely dry.
3. Avoid Irritants: Be cautious with personal care products, including lotions or scented soaps, which can irritate the skin. Opt for unscented products that are less likely to cause a reaction.
4. Clothing Choices: Wear breathable, loose-fitting underwear made from natural fibers like cotton. This can help reduce moisture buildup and irritation.
5. Limit Sexual Activity: If you notice that symptoms worsen after sexual activity, consider abstaining until the issue is resolved. This can help prevent further irritation or transmission of potential infections.
6. Follow-Up: If the red spots continue to recur or if you develop new symptoms (such as pain, discharge, or significant itching), it’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional tests to rule out other infections or conditions.
Conclusion
Recurring red spots on the glans can be frustrating and concerning. While candidal infections are a common cause, it’s essential to consider other factors that may contribute to your symptoms. Maintaining good hygiene, following your treatment plan, and consulting with your healthcare provider for persistent issues are crucial steps in managing your condition effectively. If necessary, a referral to a dermatologist or urologist may provide further insights and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
