Can I get pregnant?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask if my boyfriend rubbed against my vaginal opening while wearing a condom, and also inserted his fingers inside, but not deeply, and touched my genital area.
I'm not sure if there was any pre-ejaculate fluid on his hands, but he did wipe his hands with tissue before inserting them.
Is there a chance of pregnancy?

Xiao Tao, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/03

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the presence of active sperm in the vagina during ovulation can lead to pregnancy regardless of the method of intercourse, so your description cannot be used to estimate the likelihood of conception.
Generally, it is not recommended to rely solely on condoms for contraception.
If your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant from fingering and condom friction, the short answer is that the risk is very low, but it is not entirely zero. To understand this better, let's break down the factors involved.

1. Condom Use: If your boyfriend was wearing a condom properly during any vaginal contact, this significantly reduces the risk of pregnancy. Condoms are designed to prevent sperm from entering the vagina, and when used correctly, they are highly effective in preventing both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

2. Fingering: Fingering involves inserting fingers into the vagina. The primary concern here would be if there was any sperm present on the fingers. If your boyfriend had any semen or pre-ejaculate (also known as pre-cum) on his fingers, there is a theoretical risk of sperm being transferred to the vagina. However, sperm needs to be in a certain quantity and in a viable state to lead to pregnancy. The likelihood of sperm surviving on fingers, especially after being wiped with a tissue, is quite low.

3. Pre-ejaculate: Pre-ejaculate can contain sperm, but the amount is typically much lower than in ejaculate. If there was no direct ejaculation and the fingers were wiped clean, the chances of sperm being present are minimal.

4. Timing of Ovulation: Another important factor in determining the likelihood of pregnancy is the timing of the sexual activity in relation to the woman's ovulation cycle. If you were not in your fertile window (the days leading up to and including ovulation), the chances of conception are significantly reduced.

5. Sperm Viability: Sperm can survive outside the body for a short period, but they do not live long on dry surfaces. If the fingers were wiped with a tissue, it is unlikely that any viable sperm remained.

In summary, while the risk of pregnancy from fingering and condom friction is very low, it is not completely absent. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late or consult with a healthcare provider for further advice.
For future sexual encounters, if you want to minimize the risk of pregnancy and STIs, ensure that condoms are used correctly and consistently, and consider discussing other forms of contraception with your healthcare provider. This can provide additional peace of mind and help you make informed decisions about your sexual health.
