Penis size and development?

I'm currently 14 years old and in the third year of junior high school.
I accidentally saw my classmate's penis, and even when it wasn't erect, it looked quite large.
When I got home, I checked my own size and measured it: 9.5 cm when flaccid and 11.5 cm when erect, with a circumference of 8.5 cm when erect.
Is this length normal for my age? Is it shorter or longer than the average for someone my age? Also, my pubic hair is a bit long; can I trim it? Does pubic hair grow long like head hair?

Xiao Hao, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/03

Dr. Gao Qingyun reply Family Medicine

Hello! Regarding the size and length of pubic hair in the penile and perineal areas, due to measurement errors and the reported data not deviating significantly from normal values, it is recommended to continue monitoring or to visit a urology clinic for evaluation.
Although pubic hair will grow back after shaving, the rate of growth and the length it reaches can vary from person to person, so it is advised not to shave it yourself.
Wishing you health and happiness! Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding penis size and development during adolescence is a common concern among teenagers. At 14 years old, you are in the midst of puberty, a time when your body undergoes significant changes, including the growth and development of your genitalia.
1. Penis Size: The average penis size for boys your age can vary widely. According to various studies, the average erect penis size for adolescents can range from about 10 to 15 cm (approximately 4 to 6 inches). Your measurements of 11.5 cm when erect and 9.5 cm when flaccid are within the normal range. It's important to remember that everyone develops at their own pace, and there is a wide range of what is considered "normal."
2. Puberty and Development: During puberty, the penis and testicles grow, and this process can vary significantly from person to person. Some boys may notice changes earlier than others. The presence of pubic hair is also a sign of puberty, and it typically begins to grow around the same time as other secondary sexual characteristics, such as increased height and changes in voice.

3. Visibility of the Glans: It's normal for some boys to have varying degrees of visibility of the glans (the head of the penis) when flaccid. The amount of skin that covers the glans can depend on several factors, including the length of the penis and the amount of skin on the shaft. If you can pull back your foreskin to expose the glans without discomfort, that is generally a good sign.

4. Hair Growth: Regarding your question about pubic hair, yes, it can be trimmed if it becomes too long or uncomfortable. Pubic hair, like scalp hair, can grow longer over time, but it typically does not grow as long as hair on your head. The texture and growth pattern can vary, with some individuals having curly hair and others having straight hair.

5. Frequency of Erections: It's also normal for boys your age to experience frequent erections. This is a natural part of puberty and is influenced by hormonal changes in your body. The frequency can vary widely; some boys may have several erections a day, while others may have fewer.
6. Concerns About Development: If you have concerns about your development or if you feel that you are significantly behind your peers, it might be beneficial to speak with a healthcare provider. They can assess your growth and development and provide reassurance or guidance if needed.

7. Comparing with Peers: It’s common to compare yourself with peers, but remember that everyone develops at their own pace. Factors such as genetics, nutrition, and overall health can influence growth patterns.
In conclusion, your measurements and experiences are within the normal range for your age. Puberty is a time of change, and it’s important to be patient with your body as it develops. If you have any ongoing concerns or questions, consider discussing them with a trusted adult or healthcare provider who can provide personalized advice and support.
