Experiencing pain and bleeding during urination after sexual intercourse?

Hello, I had my first sexual intercourse with my boyfriend a few days ago, and we used a condom throughout.
It was quite painful at the time, but there was no bleeding afterward.
The next day, I experienced some mild discomfort, and I took emergency contraception.
However, today I suddenly felt pain while urinating, along with bleeding and lower abdominal pain.
Is this normal, and what can I do to address it?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description, it is possible that you have inflammation of the pelvic cavity or urinary tract.
I recommend that you consult with a gynecologist who can assess your condition and determine whether further examinations (such as ultrasound, bacterial culture of secretions, microscopic examination, urinalysis, X-rays, blood tests, etc.) are necessary to address your pain.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Experiencing painful urination and bleeding after your first sexual experience can be concerning, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and appropriate steps to take. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing symptoms that could be related to a few different issues.

Firstly, it’s not uncommon for individuals to experience discomfort or pain during their first sexual encounter. This can be due to several factors, including anxiety, lack of lubrication, or the physical nature of penetration, especially if it is a first-time experience. The hymen, which partially covers the vaginal opening, may also stretch or tear, leading to some bleeding. However, the pain and bleeding you are experiencing, especially if it persists or worsens, should not be ignored.

The symptoms you describe—painful urination, bleeding, and lower abdominal pain—could indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI) or irritation of the vaginal area. UTIs are common after sexual activity, particularly in women, and can occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract. Symptoms of a UTI include a burning sensation during urination, frequent urges to urinate, and sometimes blood in the urine. The fact that you are experiencing pain during urination and bleeding suggests that it would be wise to seek medical attention.

Here are some steps you can take:
1. Hydration: Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated can help flush out bacteria from your urinary tract and may alleviate some symptoms.

2. Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using any irritants such as scented soaps, douches, or feminine hygiene sprays, as these can exacerbate irritation.

3. Medical Consultation: It is crucial to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a urinalysis to check for signs of infection and may prescribe antibiotics if a UTI is confirmed. Additionally, they can examine you for any injuries or other issues that may have arisen from the sexual encounter.

4. Rest and Recovery: Allow your body time to heal. If you are experiencing significant discomfort, consider taking a break from sexual activity until you feel better.

5. Follow-Up: If your symptoms do not improve within a few days of treatment or if they worsen, return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

It’s also important to communicate openly with your partner about your experiences and feelings. Sexual activity should be consensual and enjoyable for both parties, and if something feels wrong, it’s essential to address it together.

In summary, while some discomfort can be normal after first-time sexual experiences, the combination of painful urination, bleeding, and abdominal pain warrants medical evaluation. Seeking prompt care will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed early, allowing you to recover fully and enjoy future experiences without anxiety or discomfort.
