Post-anal fistula surgery
It has been two weeks since the anal fistula surgery (traditional excision) on April 5th, but I occasionally experience significant bleeding (the entire gauze is soaked) and sometimes very little or none (just a small area in the center of the gauze).
Is this a normal occurrence? Additionally, there is a slight swelling near the wound; is that related? Furthermore, about ten days post-surgery, I developed a mild cold with coughing and sneezing.
Does this make the wound more prone to bleeding? Should I avoid taking cold medication during the postoperative period?

After a fistula surgery, there should not be significant bleeding two weeks post-operation.
However, if there is a pre-existing hemorrhoid issue, combined with postoperative constipation, it can easily lead to rectal bleeding.
Coughing and sneezing can also increase pressure in the anal area, which may result in bleeding.
It is permissible to take cold medications during the postoperative period, but one should be cautious to avoid any overlap with medications prescribed by the surgeon.

More Info
After undergoing anal fistula surgery, it is common to have concerns about post-operative symptoms such as bleeding and recovery. From your description, it appears that you are experiencing intermittent bleeding, which can be concerning. It is important to understand that some bleeding can be normal after such a procedure, especially in the initial weeks following surgery. However, if you are experiencing significant bleeding that saturates your dressing, this could indicate a complication that needs to be addressed by your healthcare provider.
Typically, after anal fistula surgery, the surgical site may bleed due to several factors, including the healing process, the presence of stitches, and the physical activity that may inadvertently stress the area. It is crucial to monitor the amount of bleeding; if it becomes heavy or persistent, you should contact your surgeon or healthcare provider immediately. They may want to evaluate the surgical site to ensure there are no issues such as infection or improper healing.
Regarding the swelling you mentioned near the surgical site, some degree of swelling can be expected as part of the healing process. However, if the swelling is significant or accompanied by increased pain, redness, or discharge, it could indicate an infection or other complications. Again, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.
As for your concern about coughing and sneezing due to a cold, these actions can indeed put additional strain on the surgical site and potentially lead to increased bleeding. It is essential to manage your cough and sneezing as best as you can. If you have a cold, you may consider using over-the-counter medications that are safe for post-operative patients, but it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication. Some cold medications may contain ingredients that could affect bleeding or interact with any pain medications you may be taking.
In terms of recovery, it is vital to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions closely. This may include recommendations for wound care, dietary adjustments, and activity restrictions. Maintaining a high-fiber diet and staying hydrated can help prevent constipation, which is particularly important after anal surgery, as straining during bowel movements can exacerbate bleeding and discomfort.
Additionally, you may want to consider gentle activities such as walking to promote circulation and healing, but avoid any strenuous activities that could strain the surgical site. If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as fever, increased pain, or worsening bleeding, do not hesitate to seek medical attention.
In summary, while some bleeding and swelling can be normal after anal fistula surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and communicate with your healthcare provider about any concerns. Proper post-operative care and attention to your body’s signals will aid in your recovery and help prevent complications.
