Postoperative care for fistula surgery?
Today is the 8th day post-surgery, and I suddenly felt my buttocks were damp in the evening.
Upon inspection, I discovered that the wound was bleeding profusely, specifically from the area near the incision.
At first glance, it seemed like blood was flowing from a small hole.
Could this be a recurrence? Is it possible to have a recurrence this soon? I am very worried about a recurrence.

This is likely just a simple wound oozing blood.
The surgical site for anal fistula repair typically takes about a month to fully heal, so it is important to avoid constipation or diarrhea during this period, as these conditions can easily lead to bleeding from the wound.
Additionally, prolonged straining during bowel movements should be avoided, as it can also cause swelling and bleeding at the surgical site.

Experiencing unexpected bleeding after fistula surgery can be concerning, especially when it occurs eight days post-operation. It’s important to understand that while some bleeding can be a normal part of the healing process, sudden or excessive bleeding may indicate complications that require immediate medical attention.
First, let's address the concern about recurrence. Fistula surgeries, while generally successful, can sometimes lead to complications such as infection, abscess formation, or even recurrence of the fistula itself. However, a recurrence typically does not happen so quickly after surgery. The healing process for a fistula can vary significantly from person to person, and while some may heal rapidly, others may take longer. The presence of fresh blood could be due to several factors, including:
1. Surgical Site Healing: The surgical site may still be healing, and minor bleeding can occur as the tissue regenerates. This is especially true if there has been any strain or pressure on the area, such as during bowel movements.
2. Infection: If the area becomes infected, it can lead to increased blood flow and bleeding. Signs of infection may include increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is not clear.
3. Tissue Breakdown: Sometimes, the tissue around the surgical site may break down, leading to bleeding. This can happen if the tissue is not healing properly or if there is tension on the wound.
4. Blood Vessel Damage: During surgery, small blood vessels can be inadvertently damaged, leading to delayed bleeding. This is usually not a sign of recurrence but rather a complication of the surgical procedure.
Given your description of the bleeding appearing to come from a small hole near the incision, it is crucial to seek medical advice promptly. Here are some steps you should consider:
- Contact Your Surgeon: Reach out to the surgeon or the medical team who performed the procedure. They can provide guidance on whether this bleeding is a cause for concern and whether you need to come in for an examination.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on any additional symptoms such as increased pain, swelling, fever, or changes in the appearance of the wound. These could indicate complications that require immediate attention.
- Avoid Strain: Until you have been evaluated, try to avoid activities that could put strain on the surgical site, such as heavy lifting or straining during bowel movements.
- Wound Care: Follow any post-operative care instructions provided by your healthcare team. Keeping the area clean and dry is essential for preventing infection.
In conclusion, while some bleeding can be part of the healing process, sudden or significant bleeding should not be ignored. It is essential to communicate with your healthcare provider to ensure that any potential complications are addressed promptly. Early intervention can help prevent further issues and support a smoother recovery process.
