Issues with myopia glasses?

Hello, doctor.
I currently have myopia in both eyes, with the left eye at -600 degrees and the right eye at -625 degrees.
The lens of my right eye glasses has developed significant scratches, which I occasionally notice.
Will this affect my vision? (I am studying abroad, so it's not very convenient for me to replace the lenses.) Additionally, I would like to ask if wearing glasses with a lower prescription of -100 degrees regularly and only wearing my full prescription glasses during class will have any adverse effects on my vision.
Thank you.

Xiao En, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/07

Dr. Wang Zhishun reply Ophthalmology

Hello, 1.
Scratches can potentially affect visual quality.
2.
Based on your prescription, wearing glasses with a lower prescription for everyday use and using your full prescription glasses during class should be fine.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the impact of scratched glasses on myopia and the effects of wearing different prescription lenses.
To address your first concern, scratched lenses can indeed affect your vision, especially if the scratches are significant. When you have myopia (nearsightedness), your eyes focus light in front of the retina, making distant objects appear blurry. Scratches on your lenses can distort light as it passes through, leading to visual disturbances such as blurriness, glare, or halos around lights. This can be particularly problematic for someone with high myopia, like yourself, as it may exacerbate existing visual issues. If the scratches are severe enough, they can lead to eye strain, headaches, and discomfort, especially during prolonged use, such as studying or attending classes.
While it may not be feasible for you to replace your lenses immediately due to your current situation studying abroad, it is advisable to minimize activities that require sharp vision, such as reading or using a computer, until you can get your lenses replaced. If you find that the scratches are significantly affecting your vision, it may be worth seeking out a local optometrist who can provide a temporary solution, such as a lens polish or replacement.

Regarding your second question about wearing lower prescription glasses (like -1.00) during class while typically wearing higher prescription lenses (-6.00 and -6.25), this can have implications for your vision. Wearing under-corrected lenses can lead to increased eye strain, especially if you are trying to focus on distant objects. Your eyes may work harder to compensate for the inadequate correction, which can lead to fatigue and discomfort. Over time, this could potentially worsen your myopia or lead to other visual issues.

It's essential to wear the correct prescription lenses consistently, especially during activities that require clear vision, such as attending lectures or reading. If you find that you need to wear your lower prescription glasses for comfort, consider discussing this with an eye care professional. They may suggest a more suitable solution, such as a pair of glasses specifically for classroom use that balances comfort and visual clarity.

In summary, scratched lenses can negatively impact your vision, particularly with high myopia, and wearing under-corrected glasses can lead to eye strain and discomfort. It's best to seek a replacement for your scratched lenses as soon as possible and to wear your proper prescription glasses consistently to maintain optimal vision health. If you have any further questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to an eye care professional. Take care!
