Suspected food poisoning causing skin and other symptoms?

Hello, Doctor.
Since the night before last, I have been experiencing redness and swelling all over my body accompanied by itching.
I immediately went to a nearby pharmacy and took some medication, which provided slight improvement, but once the medication wore off, the symptoms returned.
In fact, this morning, the condition has worsened, with more pronounced redness and swelling over a larger area, along with increasing dizziness and numbness in my hands and feet.
I had a serving of pasta for lunch the day before yesterday, and the sauce was moldy, although I didn't notice it at the time.
In the afternoon, I ate some seafood that I had purchased myself.
What should I do?

More Info

Food poisoning can lead to a variety of symptoms, including gastrointestinal distress, skin reactions, and neurological symptoms. In your case, the combination of widespread redness, itching, dizziness, and numbness in your extremities suggests a potentially serious reaction that warrants immediate medical attention.

First and foremost, it’s crucial to seek medical help as soon as possible. The symptoms you are experiencing could indicate an allergic reaction, possibly to the moldy sauce or the seafood you consumed. Mold can produce mycotoxins, which can lead to allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Seafood, especially if not fresh or improperly handled, can also cause foodborne illnesses that may manifest as skin rashes or systemic reactions.

When you visit a healthcare provider, they will likely conduct a thorough examination and may ask about your recent dietary intake, the onset of symptoms, and any previous history of allergies or food intolerances. It’s beneficial to keep a record of what you ate and when your symptoms began, as this information can help the physician make a more accurate diagnosis.

In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms:
1. Avoid Self-Medicating: While over-the-counter antihistamines or topical creams may provide temporary relief for itching and redness, they are not a substitute for professional medical treatment. Overuse of these medications can sometimes lead to further complications.

2. Stay Hydrated: If you are experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea, it’s important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water or electrolyte solutions, to prevent dehydration.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms. If you notice an increase in severity, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or persistent dizziness, seek emergency medical care immediately.

4. Avoid Trigger Foods: Until you have a clear understanding of what caused your reaction, it’s wise to avoid foods that you suspect may have triggered your symptoms, including moldy foods and seafood.

5. Consider Allergy Testing: If you have a history of food allergies or if your symptoms persist, your healthcare provider may recommend allergy testing to identify specific allergens.

6. Follow Up: After your initial medical visit, ensure you follow up with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and any necessary treatments or lifestyle changes.

In summary, your symptoms are concerning and could indicate a serious allergic reaction or food poisoning. Immediate medical attention is essential to determine the cause and appropriate treatment. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health issues, especially those involving potential foodborne illnesses or allergic reactions.
