Rib pain
Two nights ago, while lying on my side in bed using my phone, I suddenly felt pain in the upper part of my chest near the ribs, which has not improved since then.
In addition to the pain, I currently have a sensation of something being stuck in my throat, and I'm unsure if this is due to excessive tension or a symptom accompanying the pain.
I also don't know whether it's more likely to be a muscle injury in the rib area or damage to the ribs themselves, and I would like to request a solution.

Inappropriate pressure on one side of the chest wall may compress the ribs, causing pain that typically resolves within a few days.
If the pain is intolerable, over-the-counter pain relievers can be taken to alleviate the discomfort.

More Info
Rib pain can be a distressing experience, and understanding its causes, symptoms, and potential solutions is crucial for effective management. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing pain in the upper rib area, which has persisted since you were lying on your side while using your phone. Additionally, you mentioned a sensation of something being stuck in your throat, which could be related to anxiety or discomfort from the rib pain itself.
Causes of Rib Pain
1. Muscle Strain: One of the most common causes of rib pain, especially after a specific position or activity, is muscle strain. The intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs, can become strained from awkward positions or overuse, leading to localized pain.
2. Rib Injury: Although you mentioned that the pain started without any apparent injury, it is still possible to have a minor rib injury or contusion that may not be immediately obvious. This could occur from a fall, bump, or even from prolonged pressure on the ribs while lying down.
3. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain that may worsen with certain movements or positions.
4. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the rib area can be referred from other areas, such as the spine or even the abdomen. Conditions affecting the lungs or heart can also manifest as rib pain, although these are typically accompanied by other symptoms.
5. Anxiety and Tension: The sensation of a lump in the throat can often be linked to anxiety or stress. When experiencing pain, it is common to become tense, which can exacerbate the feeling of tightness or discomfort in the throat.
Symptoms to Monitor
- Pain Characteristics: Is the pain sharp, dull, or throbbing? Does it worsen with movement, deep breathing, or coughing?
- Location: Is the pain localized to one area, or does it radiate to other parts of the body?
- Associated Symptoms: Besides the throat sensation, are there any other symptoms such as difficulty breathing, fever, or swelling?
Solutions and Management
1. Rest and Positioning: Avoid positions that exacerbate the pain. If lying on your side is uncomfortable, try sleeping on your back or the opposite side.
2. Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Always follow the recommended dosages.
3. Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress or heating pad to the affected area can help relax tense muscles and improve blood flow, which may alleviate pain.
4. Gentle Stretching: Once the acute pain subsides, gentle stretching exercises for the chest and upper back can help improve flexibility and reduce tension in the muscles surrounding the ribs.
5. Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing exercises can help expand the lungs and may relieve some discomfort associated with rib pain. Be gentle and avoid any movements that cause pain.
6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as difficulty breathing, fever, or significant swelling, it is essential to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies (like an X-ray) to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
Conclusion
Rib pain can stem from various causes, and while muscle strain is a likely culprit given your recent activities, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you find that your pain does not improve with home management strategies or if you develop new symptoms, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment plan. Remember that your health and comfort are paramount, and seeking help is a proactive step towards recovery.
