Is my wisdom tooth coming in?
Doctor, my lower left wisdom tooth area has been inflamed for the past few days (it hasn't erupted yet), and there is a small spot that looks like pus.
Is this related to the wisdom tooth coming in? Should I take pain relievers, and will it affect the eruption of the wisdom tooth? It hurts a lot when I open my mouth.

When it comes to wisdom teeth, particularly when they are in the process of erupting, it is not uncommon to experience pain and inflammation. The symptoms you are describing, such as localized swelling and the presence of a small area that resembles pus, suggest that there may be an infection or inflammation associated with the eruption of your wisdom tooth. This condition is often referred to as pericoronitis, which occurs when the gum tissue around a partially erupted tooth becomes inflamed and infected.
The pain you are experiencing when opening your mouth is likely due to the inflammation of the surrounding tissues. When a wisdom tooth begins to erupt, it can create pressure against the gum tissue, leading to discomfort. If the tooth is not fully erupted, the gum may cover part of the tooth, creating a pocket where bacteria can accumulate, leading to infection and pus formation.
In terms of pain management, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be effective in alleviating discomfort. Ibuprofen, in particular, has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce swelling and pain. However, it is essential to follow the recommended dosage on the packaging and consult with a healthcare provider if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.
Regarding your concern about whether taking pain medication will affect the eruption of your wisdom tooth, it is unlikely. Pain relievers do not interfere with the natural process of tooth eruption. However, if there is an active infection, it is crucial to address that as well. In some cases, a dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help clear the infection, especially if there is significant swelling or pus.
It is advisable to consult with a dentist as soon as possible. They can evaluate the situation more thoroughly, possibly through an X-ray, to determine the position of the wisdom tooth and assess the extent of the inflammation or infection. If the tooth is impacted or if the infection is severe, the dentist may recommend treatment options, which could include drainage of any abscess or even extraction of the wisdom tooth if necessary.
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing are likely related to the eruption of your wisdom tooth and the associated inflammation. Pain relief can be managed with over-the-counter medications, but it is essential to seek professional dental advice to address any potential infection and to monitor the eruption process of your wisdom tooth. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a smoother recovery.
