Is there any interaction between Western medicine and the contraceptive pill (Yaz)?
Hello, I have been taking the oral contraceptive pill (Yasmin) for over a month.
Recently, I have experienced excessive stomach acid and bloating.
The doctor prescribed the following medications: Cimetidine 200 mg, Magnesium oxide 250 mg, Simethicone 40 mg, D.m.p.
tablet 10 mg, and Anaclin tablet 6 mg.
Will these medications affect the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill? How long should I wait between taking these medications and the contraceptive pill? Thank you!

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology
Hello Joyce: The components of the contraceptive pill are Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol.
Cimetidine 200 mg is a medication for the stomach, Magnesium Oxide 250 mg is used for softening stools and as a gastric medication, and Simethicone 40 mg (Gascon) is for relieving gas.
D.m.p tablet 10 mg (Domperidone) has strong effects in promoting gastric emptying and antiemetic properties.
"Ankumin tablet 6 mg (Betahistine)" is a peripheral vasodilator that enhances circulation.
It has been checked and found that there are no interactions with the medications, but using caffeine and contraceptives together may lead to enhanced stimulation of the central nervous system.
Additionally, grapefruit juice should be avoided as it can increase the concentration of the contraceptive in the bloodstream.
What is the recommended time interval between taking these medications and the contraceptive pill? The answer is that it is generally fine to take them together.
Wishing you peace and happiness.

More Info
When it comes to the interaction between prescription medications and birth control pills, it's important to understand how certain medications can potentially affect the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives. In your case, you are taking a combination of medications for gastrointestinal issues, including Cimetidine, Magnesium oxide, Simethicone, D.m.p. tablet, and Ankumin.
Cimetidine, which is an H2 receptor antagonist used to reduce stomach acid, has been shown in some studies to potentially decrease the effectiveness of certain birth control pills. This is primarily due to its ability to inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver, which are involved in the metabolism of many drugs, including hormonal contraceptives. However, the clinical significance of this interaction is often debated, and many healthcare providers believe that the effect is minimal, especially with modern formulations of birth control pills that contain higher doses of hormones.
Magnesium oxide and Simethicone are generally considered safe to use with birth control pills and are not known to interfere with their effectiveness. Magnesium oxide is often used as an antacid and for its laxative properties, while Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent that helps relieve bloating and discomfort. These medications do not have any known interactions with hormonal contraceptives.
D.m.p. (Dexamethasone, Methylprednisolone, or similar) and Ankumin (which may refer to a specific formulation of a medication) should also be evaluated for their potential interactions. Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, can have various effects on metabolism and may influence the effectiveness of birth control pills, but again, this is often dependent on the dosage and duration of use.
In terms of timing, it is generally recommended to take your medications at least 2-4 hours apart from your birth control pill to minimize any potential interactions. This is particularly important for medications that may affect the gastrointestinal tract, as they can alter the absorption of the hormones in the contraceptive pill.
If you are concerned about the effectiveness of your birth control due to these medications, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific medications, health history, and any other factors that may be relevant. Additionally, if you experience any side effects or changes in your menstrual cycle while taking these medications, it is important to report these to your doctor.
In summary, while some medications can potentially interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills, the specific medications you are taking may have minimal impact. It is always best to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider to ensure that you are using your medications safely and effectively.
