Discharge from pimple-like lesions around the nipple?
Today, I noticed a bump near my nipple that resembles a pimple with some discharge while taking a shower.
I'm hesitant to squeeze it and I'm unsure whether I should see a breast surgeon or a dermatologist.
I'm quite worried.

Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid
Dear Ting: It is generally acceptable; it is often caused by the obstruction of skin glands, and there is no need to intentionally squeeze them.
If there is redness, swelling, or pain, then antibiotic treatment or surgery may be necessary.

More Info
When you notice a pimple-like bump near the nipple accompanied by discharge, it can understandably cause concern. There are several potential causes for such symptoms, and it’s essential to approach this situation with a clear understanding of what might be happening.
Firstly, the bump you are describing could be a sebaceous cyst, which is a common type of skin cyst that can occur anywhere on the body, including the breast area. These cysts are usually benign and can feel soft or firm to the touch. They may sometimes become inflamed or infected, leading to redness, swelling, and discharge. If the cyst is not causing significant discomfort or showing signs of infection, it may not require immediate treatment, but monitoring it is advisable.
Another possibility is a condition known as a mammary duct ectasia, which occurs when a milk duct beneath the nipple dilates, fills with fluid, and thickens. This can lead to a sticky, sometimes green or black discharge and may cause tenderness or a lump near the nipple. While this condition is often benign, it can sometimes lead to infections or other complications.
In some cases, the bump could be related to hormonal changes, particularly if you are experiencing other symptoms such as breast tenderness or changes in your menstrual cycle. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to the development of fibrocystic breast changes, which are characterized by lumpy, painful breasts that may have associated discharge.
It’s also important to consider the possibility of an infection, such as a breast abscess, especially if the bump is painful, red, or warm to the touch. Infections can lead to pus formation and require medical treatment, including antibiotics or drainage.
Given your concern and the presence of discharge, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. You can consider scheduling an appointment with either a breast surgeon or a dermatologist. A breast surgeon specializes in conditions related to the breast and can provide a thorough examination, potentially including imaging studies like an ultrasound if necessary. A dermatologist can also evaluate the skin condition and determine if it is related to a dermatological issue.
When you visit the doctor, be prepared to provide a detailed history of your symptoms, including when you first noticed the bump, any changes in size or appearance, the nature of the discharge, and any associated symptoms such as pain or tenderness. This information will help the healthcare provider make an accurate diagnosis.
In the meantime, avoid squeezing or trying to pop the bump, as this can lead to further irritation or infection. Keeping the area clean and dry is essential, and if you notice any worsening symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or fever, seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while pimple-like bumps near the nipple can have various benign causes, it is crucial to have them evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment if necessary. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, so don’t hesitate to seek help.
