Administration of progesterone?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask a question about progesterone.
I am currently 6 weeks pregnant and noticed pink spotting this morning.
I went to the hospital for a transvaginal ultrasound, and there was a heartbeat.
The doctor mentioned that progesterone can be taken or not, but for peace of mind, I was prescribed Duphaston 10 mg to take once in the morning and once in the evening for 5 days.
After taking one dose, it seems that the bleeding has stopped.
Do I still need to continue taking it? If I continue to take it, will it cause progesterone overdose? Could it lead to any complications? Thank you for your response.

Hello, brown discharge may indicate a slight miscarriage.
Generally, resting can improve the situation.
If there is no bleeding, medication may not be necessary.
Wishing you good health.

During early pregnancy, the use of progesterone, particularly in the form of medications like Duphaston, is a common practice, especially for women who experience symptoms such as spotting or bleeding. Progesterone plays a crucial role in maintaining pregnancy by supporting the uterine lining and preventing contractions that could lead to miscarriage.
In your case, since you are six weeks pregnant and have experienced pink spotting, your doctor’s recommendation to take Duphaston (which contains dydrogesterone, a synthetic form of progesterone) is aimed at providing additional support to your pregnancy. The fact that you have seen a reduction in bleeding after taking the medication is a positive sign, as it indicates that the progesterone may be helping stabilize your pregnancy.
Regarding your concerns about whether to continue taking Duphaston, it is essential to follow your doctor's advice. If your doctor has prescribed a five-day course and you have already taken one dose without further bleeding, it may be beneficial to complete the course as prescribed. Stopping the medication prematurely could potentially lead to a return of symptoms, especially if your body was initially low on progesterone.
As for the concern about progesterone overdose, it is important to note that while excessive levels of progesterone can lead to side effects, the doses typically prescribed during early pregnancy are considered safe. Duphaston is generally well-tolerated, and serious side effects are rare. However, if you experience any unusual symptoms such as severe headaches, mood changes, or any other concerning signs, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.
In summary, progesterone supplementation during early pregnancy is often necessary for women who experience bleeding or have a history of miscarriage. It helps to create a supportive environment for the developing embryo. Your doctor’s guidance is crucial, and it is advisable to complete the prescribed course of Duphaston unless instructed otherwise. Always communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns or symptoms you may experience during your pregnancy. This will ensure that you receive the best care tailored to your specific situation.
Moreover, it is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, including proper nutrition, hydration, and adequate rest, as these factors can also contribute to a successful pregnancy. If you have any further questions or concerns about your medication or pregnancy, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
