Possibility of Pregnancy

My last menstrual period was on February 27, with a cycle of approximately 35 days, so I was expecting my period around April 2 or 3.
However, it still hasn't arrived.
I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend during the safe period at the end of my cycle on April 1 and April 5, and he used a condom throughout, with external ejaculation.
We also confirmed the integrity of the condom by filling it with water afterward.
I've taken pregnancy tests over the past few days, about 5 or 6 times, and all have been negative.
I also visited a gynecologist on April 8, who confirmed that I am not pregnant.
I tested again yesterday, and the result was still negative.
However, I occasionally experience dull abdominal pain, which makes me worry about the possibility of pregnancy.
Based on this information, what is the likelihood of pregnancy? Or could it be that I am just experiencing stress? Is it possible to get accurate pregnancy test results 12 to 13 days after intercourse?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, a pregnancy test is usually reliable only after 12 days post-conception.
The chances of pregnancy are low, so it's best to use contraception beforehand.
If your period is still absent after one week, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding the chances of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, it's important to consider several factors, including the timing of ovulation, the reliability of contraceptive methods used, and the sensitivity of pregnancy tests.

Based on your menstrual cycle, which is approximately 35 days, ovulation likely occurs around day 21 of your cycle. If your last menstrual period started on February 27, you would expect your next period around April 3. Engaging in sexual intercourse on April 1 and April 5, while your boyfriend used a condom and practiced withdrawal, significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy. Condoms, when used correctly, are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, and the additional measure of withdrawal further decreases the risk.

You mentioned that you have taken multiple pregnancy tests, all of which have returned negative results. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable when used correctly, especially if taken after a missed period. Since you are testing approximately 12 to 13 days after your expected ovulation, it is likely that a pregnancy test would yield accurate results by this time. The sensitivity of most home pregnancy tests can detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in urine, which typically becomes detectable about a week after implantation, or around the time of a missed period.

The abdominal discomfort you are experiencing could be attributed to various non-pregnancy-related factors, such as stress, hormonal fluctuations, or even premenstrual symptoms. Stress can significantly impact your menstrual cycle, potentially causing delays or irregularities. If your period does not arrive soon, it may be beneficial to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, given the precautions taken during intercourse and the negative pregnancy tests, the likelihood of pregnancy appears low. However, if your period does not arrive within a week or if you continue to experience symptoms that concern you, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider for further assessment. They may recommend a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than urine tests and can provide a definitive answer.

In the realm of reproductive health, understanding your cycle and the effectiveness of contraceptive methods is crucial. If you have ongoing concerns about your menstrual cycle or reproductive health, consider discussing them with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and support.
