Red spots on the glans?
Hello, doctor.
I have a red spot on my glans.
At first, it was just a small area, but then it increased in number.
I went to see a traditional Chinese medicine doctor who briefly examined me and said it was genital warts.
He gave me a bottle of topical medication to apply, which only slightly improved the condition, but there are still some red spots remaining.
After using the medication, I felt that the first doctor was unfriendly, so I decided to seek a second opinion.
I explained my situation to the second doctor, who examined me and said that I have genital warts on the shaft of my penis, but there are no raised red or white spots, just the skin of the shaft.
I have now finished the medication prescribed by the second doctor, but there are still red areas on my glans without any raised lesions.
Could you please tell me if this is still genital warts?

If you have concerns about potential exposure due to risky sexual behavior, it is advisable to see a urologist for evaluation and follow-up.

When it comes to red spots on the glans (the head of the penis), it is essential to consider various potential causes and treatments. Based on your description, it seems you have been experiencing red spots that have increased in number over time. You initially consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who suggested that these spots might be related to "cauliflower" (likely referring to genital warts), and you were given topical medication that provided only slight improvement. Afterward, you sought a second opinion from another doctor who also mentioned the possibility of genital warts but noted that there were no raised red or white lesions on the shaft of the penis.
Genital warts are caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a sexually transmitted infection. They can appear as small, flesh-colored or gray growths and may not always be raised. However, the presence of red spots alone does not definitively indicate genital warts. Other conditions could also be responsible for the symptoms you are experiencing, including:
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, irritation from soaps, lotions, or even friction can cause redness and spots on the glans. If you have recently changed any personal care products, this could be a factor.
2. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by infections (bacterial or fungal), poor hygiene, or skin conditions. Symptoms can include redness, swelling, and discomfort.
3. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the glans and are often mistaken for warts. They are a normal anatomical variation and do not require treatment.
4. Other Skin Conditions: Conditions like psoriasis or eczema can also cause red spots or patches on the skin, including the genital area.
Given that you have seen two doctors and have not received a definitive diagnosis, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist or a urologist who specializes in male genital health. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend additional tests, such as a biopsy, to determine the exact nature of the red spots.
In terms of treatment, it will depend on the underlying cause. If it is indeed genital warts, treatment options include topical medications, cryotherapy (freezing the warts), or surgical removal. If it is an irritation or infection, appropriate topical or oral medications may be prescribed.
It is also important to practice safe sex to prevent the spread of HPV and other sexually transmitted infections. Using condoms can reduce the risk, although they do not provide complete protection against HPV since the virus can be present on skin not covered by a condom.
In summary, while the red spots on the glans could potentially be related to genital warts, other conditions must be considered. A thorough examination by a specialist is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. If you continue to experience symptoms or have concerns, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice.
