Cough medication issues?
Hello, pharmacist: I visited the doctor due to a cold and cough, and he prescribed the following medications: ambroxol tablets and Suconin capsules.
After taking them for the past couple of days, I noticed that my heart rate has increased from an average of 70s to around 90s to over 100.
Could this be a side effect of these medications? Thank you for your response, pharmacist.

Dr. Gu Zhenting reply Pharmacology
Ambroxol tablets are expectorants.
Suconin Capsules contain three active ingredients: Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide 20 mg, Potassium Cresolsulfonate 90 mg, and Lysozyme Chloride 20 mg.
Pharmacologically, these medications do not cause an increase in heart rate.
Common cold medications that can lead to an increased heart rate typically contain Pseudoephedrine (used for relieving nasal congestion).
There are many reasons for an increased heart rate, including colds and fever.
If there are still concerns, it is advisable to inform the physician during the next visit for further evaluation.

More Info
Ambroxol and Suconin Capsules are commonly used medications for treating cough and respiratory conditions, particularly those associated with mucus production. Ambroxol is primarily a mucolytic agent, which means it helps to break down and thin mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. Suconin Capsules contain a combination of Dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant), Potassium Cresolsulfonate (an expectorant), and Lysozyme Chloride (an enzyme that has antibacterial properties).
Based on the pharmacological profiles of these medications, neither Ambroxol nor Suconin is typically associated with causing an increased heart rate (tachycardia). The increase in heart rate you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors unrelated to these medications. For instance, common symptoms of a cold, such as fever, dehydration, or anxiety, can lead to an elevated heart rate. Additionally, if you are experiencing any discomfort or stress due to your illness, this could also contribute to the increase in your heart rate.
It is important to consider other potential causes of tachycardia. For example, if you have been experiencing fever due to your cold, your body may respond with an increased heart rate as part of the immune response. Dehydration, which can occur with fever or reduced fluid intake, can also lead to an elevated heart rate. Furthermore, if you have any underlying health conditions, such as anxiety or panic disorders, these can exacerbate feelings of increased heart rate.
If you are concerned about the increase in your heart rate, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include checking your vital signs, conducting an electrocardiogram (ECG), or other diagnostic tests to rule out any underlying conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms.
In summary, while Ambroxol and Suconin Capsules are not known to cause an increased heart rate, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. If the increased heart rate persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness, seek medical attention immediately.
