How to increase height?

Hello Doctor: I am currently a 15-year-old high school freshman (I will turn 16 in three months).
I got my first period in the second year of junior high school, and my growth plates are closing quickly.
I am currently only 153 cm tall, and I am very concerned about my appearance.
I really want to grow taller and hope to reach 158 cm.
My parents are both not tall.
Is there still a chance for me to grow? What can I do?

Zi Xuan, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/17

Hello: In addition to genetic factors, postnatal influences such as nutrition and rest are more important for height.
Please do not put too much pressure on yourself.
Ensure you consume adequate nutrition, maintain a regular lifestyle, and get sufficient sleep without staying up late.
Even if the growth plates are nearing closure, there is still a small chance for height increase.

At 15 years old, you are still within the age range where growth can occur, but several factors influence your potential for height increase. The growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. Once these plates close, which typically happens after puberty, further height increase is unlikely.
Given that you mentioned your growth plates are "almost closed," it suggests that you may have limited time left for significant height increase. However, it is important to note that growth patterns can vary widely among individuals. Some people may experience growth spurts later in their teenage years, while others may stop growing earlier.

Here are some tips that may help you maximize your growth potential:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is crucial for growth. Ensure you consume adequate amounts of protein (found in meat, fish, eggs, and legumes), calcium (found in dairy products and leafy greens), and vitamin D (which can be obtained from sunlight and fortified foods). These nutrients are essential for bone health and growth.

2. Sleep: Growth hormone, which plays a key role in growth, is primarily released during sleep. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night. Establishing a regular sleep schedule and creating a restful environment can improve your sleep quality.

3. Exercise: Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises and activities that promote good posture (like swimming, basketball, or yoga), can help stimulate growth. Engaging in sports can also improve your overall health and body composition.

4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can help you appear taller and may also prevent spinal issues. Practice standing and sitting up straight, and consider exercises that strengthen your core muscles.

5. Avoid Growth Inhibitors: Certain lifestyle choices can negatively impact growth. Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and the use of recreational drugs, as these can interfere with your body's ability to grow.

6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have concerns about your growth or if you are considering any supplements or treatments (like growth hormone therapy), it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider. They can assess your growth plates through X-rays and provide personalized advice based on your health and family history.

7. Genetics: Understand that genetics plays a significant role in determining height. If your parents are not tall, it may be less likely for you to reach a height significantly above theirs. However, this does not mean you cannot grow taller than your current height.

In conclusion, while there may still be a chance for you to grow taller, it is essential to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and managing your expectations based on your genetic background. Remember, height is just one aspect of who you are, and confidence and self-acceptance are equally important. If you have further concerns about your growth or health, don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
