Pain in the protruding bone of the right wrist?
Hello, doctor.
I work in the food service industry and often need to lift heavy objects and perform strenuous tasks.
About two weeks ago, I noticed that the bone on my right wrist, particularly the prominent bone extending from my thumb, is very painful.
It even hurts when I hold a pen to write, and occasionally I feel a sensation as if the bone is dislocated.
Could you please tell me what kind of issue this might be?

In that area, two tendons pass through a narrow sheath, making it more susceptible to inflammation, especially with repetitive movements or frequent exertion.
This condition may be De Quervain's tenosynovitis (also known as "mommy's thumb").
If the pain is severe, over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate it, but it may be necessary to consult a physician.
Sometimes, a local injection can lead to quicker relief.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns about the pain and swelling in your right wrist. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a condition related to repetitive strain or injury, which is common in professions that require heavy lifting and repetitive motions, such as in the food service industry.
The symptoms you describe—pain, swelling, and a sensation of bone displacement—could be indicative of several potential issues. One possibility is a wrist sprain, which occurs when the ligaments in the wrist are stretched or torn due to overuse or trauma. Another possibility is tendinitis, which is inflammation of the tendons in the wrist, often caused by repetitive motions. De Quervain's tenosynovitis is a specific type of tendinitis that affects the tendons at the base of the thumb and can cause pain along the thumb side of the wrist.
Additionally, you might be experiencing symptoms of arthritis, particularly if you have a history of joint issues or if the pain persists. Osteoarthritis, for example, can develop in the wrist joints and lead to swelling and pain, especially with movement. Another condition to consider is a ganglion cyst, which is a fluid-filled sac that can develop on the wrist and cause swelling and discomfort.
Given the nature of your work and the symptoms you've described, it is essential to take a few steps to address the issue. Here are some recommendations:
1. Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain, especially heavy lifting or repetitive wrist movements. Giving your wrist time to heal is crucial.
2. Ice: Apply ice packs to the affected area for 15-20 minutes several times a day to reduce swelling and numb the pain.
3. Compression: Use a compression bandage or wrist brace to support the wrist and minimize swelling.
4. Elevation: Keep your wrist elevated above the level of your heart when possible to help reduce swelling.
5. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
6. Physical Therapy: If the pain persists, consider consulting a physical therapist who can provide exercises to strengthen the wrist and improve flexibility.
7. Medical Evaluation: If your symptoms do not improve with these measures, it is essential to see a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an X-ray or MRI, to assess for any underlying issues like fractures, tendon injuries, or arthritis.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to overuse or strain from your work in the restaurant industry, it is essential to monitor your condition closely. If the pain and swelling persist or worsen, seeking medical attention will be crucial for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and a quicker return to your regular activities. Take care of your wrist, and I hope you find relief soon!
