Wrist Pain: Causes and Solutions for Computer Users - Orthopedics

Wrist pain can occur under certain circumstances?

Hello, doctor.
I have a few questions to ask.
When I use the computer, I use my right hand for the mouse, and after a while, the outer side of my right wrist (the area where the little finger connects to the palm and wrist) starts to feel numb and painful.
Additionally, when I do push-ups (specifically, knee push-ups), after a few repetitions, both of my wrists begin to feel uncomfortable, especially my right wrist, which gradually becomes painful and tingling.
Could this situation be caused by improper posture? P.S.
My job requires me to use the computer for long periods, and I also need to exercise daily.

Hello, regarding your wrist issue, if you have been using the computer for long periods of time consistently, it could be a possible cause of your current numbness and pain.
I recommend that you visit an orthopedic clinic for a personal consultation with a physician.

More Info

Wrist pain, especially among computer users, is a common issue that can arise from various factors, including improper posture, repetitive strain, and underlying medical conditions. Based on your description, it seems that your wrist pain may be related to a combination of ergonomic factors and the physical demands of your activities.

Causes of Wrist Pain in Computer Users
1. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI): Prolonged use of a computer mouse can lead to RSI, which is characterized by pain, numbness, and weakness in the affected area. This is often due to repetitive motions and sustained pressure on the wrist.

2. Poor Ergonomics: If your workstation is not set up correctly, it can lead to awkward wrist positions. For instance, if your mouse is too high or too low, or if your wrist is bent at an uncomfortable angle while typing or using the mouse, it can strain the wrist muscles and tendons.

3. Tendonitis: This is an inflammation of the tendons in the wrist, often caused by repetitive movements. It can result in pain and discomfort, particularly during activities that involve wrist movement.

4. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This condition occurs when the median nerve, which runs through the wrist, becomes compressed. Symptoms include pain, numbness, and tingling in the fingers and hand, particularly when using the mouse or typing.

5. Wrist Sprains or Strains: If you engage in physical activities like push-ups, improper form can lead to sprains or strains in the wrist, causing pain and discomfort.

Solutions for Wrist Pain
1. Ergonomic Adjustments: Ensure that your workstation is ergonomically friendly. Your chair should support your lower back, and your wrists should be in a neutral position while typing or using the mouse. Consider using a wrist rest to help maintain a neutral wrist position.

2. Take Breaks: Implement the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This helps reduce eye strain and encourages you to stretch your wrists and hands.

3. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Regularly perform wrist stretches and strengthening exercises to improve flexibility and reduce tension. Simple stretches include extending your arm with your palm facing down and gently pulling back on your fingers with the other hand.

4. Proper Technique in Exercise: When doing push-ups or other exercises, ensure that your wrists are aligned properly. You might want to try using push-up bars or doing them on your fists to keep your wrists in a more neutral position.

5. Use of Supportive Gear: Consider using wrist braces or supports, especially during activities that exacerbate your pain. These can help stabilize the wrist and reduce strain.

6. Consult a Specialist: If your pain persists despite these adjustments, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a physical therapist or an orthopedic specialist. They can provide a tailored treatment plan, which may include physical therapy, ergonomic assessments, or other interventions.

Conclusion
In summary, your wrist pain appears to be linked to your computer usage and exercise habits. By making ergonomic adjustments, taking regular breaks, and ensuring proper technique during physical activities, you can alleviate some of the discomfort. However, if the pain continues or worsens, seeking professional medical advice is crucial to rule out any serious underlying conditions and to receive appropriate treatment.
