Persistent wrist pain that does not improve with treatment?
Hello, I have been experiencing wrist pain for several years due to prolonged computer use and typing.
I have tried pain relievers and acupuncture, but my condition has not improved.
Would physical therapy be helpful? Additionally, what other treatment options are available?

Dear qq: Wrist pain is tendonitis.

Chronic wrist pain, particularly in individuals who spend long hours typing or using a computer, is a common issue that can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. The condition you are experiencing may be related to repetitive strain injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or tendinitis, which are often exacerbated by prolonged use of the wrist in a fixed position.
Physical therapy can indeed be beneficial for chronic wrist pain. A physical therapist can provide a tailored rehabilitation program that includes exercises to strengthen the muscles around the wrist, improve flexibility, and enhance overall function. They may also employ modalities such as ultrasound therapy, electrical stimulation, or manual therapy techniques to alleviate pain and promote healing. Additionally, ergonomic assessments can be performed to optimize your workstation setup, which can help reduce strain on your wrists during typing or other repetitive tasks.
In addition to physical therapy, there are several other treatment options you might consider:
1. Ergonomic Adjustments: Ensure that your workstation is set up to minimize strain on your wrists. This may include using an ergonomic keyboard and mouse, adjusting chair height, and ensuring that your wrists are in a neutral position while typing.
2. Wrist Splints: Wearing a wrist splint, especially at night, can help keep your wrist in a neutral position and reduce strain on the tendons and nerves. This is particularly helpful for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome.
3. Activity Modification: Taking regular breaks during typing or computer work can help reduce the risk of exacerbating your wrist pain. Implementing the 20-20-20 rule, where you take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes, can also be beneficial.
4. Occupational Therapy: An occupational therapist can work with you to develop strategies for managing your pain while maintaining your productivity. They can also provide education on proper body mechanics and techniques to minimize strain.
5. Corticosteroid Injections: If conservative treatments do not provide relief, corticosteroid injections may be considered to reduce inflammation and pain in the wrist.
6. Surgery: In cases where conservative treatments fail and there is significant impairment, surgical options may be explored. This could involve decompression of the median nerve in carpal tunnel syndrome or repair of any damaged tendons.
7. Alternative Therapies: Some individuals find relief through acupuncture, massage therapy, or chiropractic care. While the evidence for these treatments can vary, they may provide additional options for pain management.
8. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing stress can also contribute to overall musculoskeletal health and may help alleviate chronic pain.
In summary, while pain relief is an important aspect of treatment, addressing the underlying causes of chronic wrist pain through physical therapy, ergonomic adjustments, and lifestyle modifications can lead to more effective long-term management. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can assess your specific situation and recommend a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs.
