Persistent urge to urinate?
A couple of days ago, after having intercourse with my husband, I have been experiencing a persistent urge to urinate, along with the appearance of small bumps in the vulvar area, which is making me a bit anxious.
I am unsure of the cause.
Although I have the urge to urinate, I am not producing much urine, about 600-1000cc per day.
What steps should I take to address this?

Persistent urge to urinate, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as the appearance of lumps in the genital area, can be concerning and warrants further investigation. There are several potential causes for these symptoms, and understanding them can help guide your next steps.
1. Possible Causes:
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): One of the most common causes of a persistent urge to urinate is a urinary tract infection. UTIs can cause inflammation and irritation of the bladder, leading to increased urgency and frequency of urination. Symptoms may also include burning during urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and sometimes fever.
- Vaginal Infections or Conditions: The lumps you mentioned could be related to a vaginal infection, such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. These conditions can also cause discomfort and changes in urination patterns.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, especially around menstruation or menopause, can affect urinary function and lead to increased urgency.
- Bladder Conditions: Conditions such as interstitial cystitis or overactive bladder can cause persistent urgency and discomfort.
- Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Issues with the pelvic floor muscles can lead to urinary urgency and frequency.
2. When to Seek Help:
- If you experience persistent symptoms such as a strong urge to urinate, pain during urination, or the presence of lumps or unusual changes in the genital area, it is important to consult a healthcare provider.
- Additionally, if you notice any signs of infection, such as fever, chills, or worsening pain, seek medical attention promptly.
3. What to Expect During a Medical Evaluation:
- A healthcare provider will likely take a detailed medical history and perform a physical examination. They may also conduct tests such as a urinalysis to check for signs of infection or other abnormalities.
- Depending on the findings, further tests such as imaging studies or a referral to a specialist (such as a urologist or gynecologist) may be necessary.
4. Management Options:
- If a UTI is diagnosed, antibiotics are typically prescribed. For other conditions, treatment may vary based on the underlying cause.
- Lifestyle modifications, pelvic floor exercises, and medications may be recommended for managing symptoms of overactive bladder or pelvic floor dysfunction.
5. Self-Care Measures:
- In the meantime, staying hydrated and avoiding irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods may help alleviate some symptoms.
- Practicing good hygiene and wearing breathable cotton underwear can also be beneficial.
In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing can be caused by various conditions, it is crucial to seek medical advice to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and improve your quality of life.
