Intermittent urge to urinate?
Five days ago, while studying in the library (trying to calm down), I started to feel the urge to urinate, even though I had just gone to the bathroom.
This sensation persisted for three days.
I searched online but couldn't find a clear explanation, as it seems that inflammation in the urinary system is usually accompanied by other symptoms (such as pain or burning).
On the third night, I went to see a doctor.
Since I couldn't find a urology clinic, I visited a doctor who specializes in diabetes.
After explaining my situation, it seemed that no examination was conducted.
The doctor mentioned that at my age, prostate issues are unlikely, and suggested it might be urethritis (but isn't inflammation usually accompanied by other symptoms?).
I took antibiotics for three days, and it seems to have improved somewhat, but I still have that sensation.
It seems I need to take them for a week.
Today is Sunday, and I would like to ask if skipping a day of medication could lead to antibiotic resistance? However, while researching related information, the urge to urinate has increased a bit more.
I'm wondering if this could be a psychological factor? Should I go to a clinic that specializes in urology, or would it be better to go to a larger hospital for further examination? PS: I don't wake up at night to urinate; it seems that this feeling occurs particularly when I am trying to calm down.
Thank you, doctor.

Mr.
Liu: Hello, there are many causes of frequent urination.
Physiologically, it can be due to infections, excessive fluid intake, pregnancy, tumors, etc.
Psychologically, factors such as anxiety can also contribute.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is indeed a consideration after the age of 60.
As for whether it is an infection, it entirely depends on clinical symptoms and test results.
May I ask if you experience frequent urination while asleep? If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again so we can discuss and research further.

More Info
Understanding persistent urge to urinate can be quite complex, as it often involves a combination of physiological and psychological factors. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a frequent urge to urinate even shortly after having just emptied your bladder. This sensation can be distressing and may lead to anxiety, especially when it disrupts your focus, such as while studying in a library.
There are several potential causes for this persistent urge. One common cause is overactive bladder (OAB), a condition characterized by an urgent need to urinate frequently, often with little warning. OAB can occur without any underlying infection, and it may not always be accompanied by other symptoms such as pain or burning. In your case, the fact that you do not experience nocturia (waking up at night to urinate) suggests that your bladder may not be completely dysfunctional, but rather hyperactive during certain situations, such as when you are focused or stressed.
Another possibility is urinary tract infection (UTI), which can cause an increased urge to urinate, often accompanied by discomfort or burning sensations. However, you mentioned that you did not experience these additional symptoms, and your doctor suggested that it might be urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), which can also lead to similar urges without the classic signs of infection.
Regarding your concern about antibiotic use, it is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions when taking antibiotics. Skipping doses can indeed contribute to antibiotic resistance, which is a significant public health concern. If you are prescribed a course of antibiotics, it is generally recommended to complete the entire course as directed, even if you start to feel better before finishing the medication. If you have concerns about side effects or the effectiveness of the treatment, it is best to discuss these with your healthcare provider rather than adjusting the dosage on your own.
Psychological factors can also play a significant role in urinary symptoms. Anxiety and stress can exacerbate the sensation of urgency. It is not uncommon for individuals to experience increased urinary frequency when they are in situations that require concentration or when they feel nervous. This could explain why you feel the urge more acutely when you are studying quietly. If you suspect that anxiety may be contributing to your symptoms, it might be beneficial to explore relaxation techniques or speak with a mental health professional.
As for whether to visit a urology clinic or a larger hospital, it depends on the severity and persistence of your symptoms. If the urge continues despite antibiotic treatment and is affecting your daily life, it would be wise to consult a urologist. They can perform specific tests, such as a urinalysis or bladder function tests, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. A urologist specializes in urinary tract issues and can provide targeted treatment options, which may include medications, behavioral therapies, or lifestyle modifications.
In summary, persistent urges to urinate can stem from various causes, including overactive bladder, urinary tract infections, or psychological factors. It is essential to complete your antibiotic course as prescribed and to seek further evaluation from a urologist if symptoms persist. Addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of your condition will be crucial in finding an effective solution.
