There are small lumps in the armpit?
Hello doctor, I just gave birth and noticed some lumps in my armpit over the past couple of days.
They are not painful; one side has two lumps and the other side has one.
Could this be swelling? I have had breast augmentation surgery; could this be related? Thank you!

Hello, it sounds more like accessory breast tissue.
Did you notice this during your pregnancy? It would be advisable to consult your physician for a personal examination during your follow-up visit.
Reference information online: Expectant mothers often encounter this situation: after a few months of pregnancy, most individuals with accessory breast tissue become aware of two nipple-like structures under their armpits in early pregnancy.
Initially, they may think these are just small lumps, and when pressed, milk may even be expressed.
They worry about potential impacts on fetal development and the risk of future malignancy, feeling uncertain about what to do.
In fact, this is known as "accessory breast tissue," which can manifest prominently before or during pregnancy.
In reality, if you draw a line from the armpit through the nipple to the groin, accessory breast tissue can potentially develop along this line.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
After giving birth, it's not uncommon for new mothers to notice changes in their bodies, including the appearance of lumps or bumps in various areas, such as the armpits. In your case, you mentioned discovering small lumps in your armpit area that are not painful. Here’s a comprehensive understanding of what these lumps could be and what you should consider.
Possible Causes of Lumps in the Armpit
1. Lymph Nodes: The armpit (axillary) region contains lymph nodes, which are part of the immune system. These nodes can become enlarged due to various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or even hormonal changes after pregnancy. It's possible that the lumps you feel are swollen lymph nodes, which can occur as your body adjusts post-delivery.
2. Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy and postpartum periods are characterized by significant hormonal fluctuations. These changes can lead to various benign conditions, including cysts or fibrocystic changes in breast tissue, which may extend into the armpit area.
3. Fatty Tumors (Lipomas): These are benign tumors made up of fat tissue. They are usually soft, movable, and painless. If the lumps feel soft and are not causing discomfort, they could be lipomas.
4. Infection or Inflammation: Sometimes, infections in the breast or skin can lead to swollen lymph nodes or localized lumps. If you notice any redness, warmth, or other signs of infection, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider.
5. Post-Surgical Changes: Since you mentioned having breast augmentation surgery, it’s worth considering that the surgical procedure could lead to changes in the surrounding tissue, including the armpit area. Scar tissue or changes in the lymphatic drainage post-surgery might contribute to the lumps you are feeling.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While many causes of lumps in the armpit are benign, it’s crucial to monitor the situation. Here are some signs that warrant a visit to your healthcare provider:
- Persistent or Growing Lumps: If the lumps do not resolve or continue to grow over time.
- Pain or Discomfort: Although you mentioned that the lumps are not painful, any new pain should be evaluated.
- Associated Symptoms: If you experience fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or other systemic symptoms, it’s essential to seek medical advice.
- Changes in Breast Tissue: If you notice any changes in your breast tissue, such as new lumps or changes in shape or size, these should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Conclusion
In summary, the lumps you are feeling in your armpit after giving birth could be related to normal postpartum changes, swollen lymph nodes, or benign growths. Given your history of breast surgery, it’s also possible that these lumps are related to that procedure. While many causes are benign, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. If you have any concerns or if the lumps change in size or character, consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies or further examinations to ensure everything is normal. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, especially during the postpartum period.
