The wound sutures were not removed completely?
Hello, I had double eyelid surgery last year, but recently I've noticed what seems to be a trace of a suture on my eyelid.
That suture appears to be encapsulated by the skin since it's been over a year.
I would like to know if leaving the suture in place could cause inflammation.
Is there a way to confirm the presence of the suture inside through an X-ray? If I undergo another surgery on the eyelid, will it affect the original double eyelid?

After undergoing double eyelid surgery, it's not uncommon for patients to have concerns about the presence of unremoved stitches, especially if they notice visible threads or marks on their eyelids. Here are some key points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Presence of Unremoved Stitches: If stitches are left in the skin for an extended period, there is a possibility of complications, including inflammation or infection. The body may react to the foreign material, leading to localized irritation or even chronic inflammation. However, many absorbable sutures are designed to dissolve over time, typically within a few weeks to months. If the stitches you are noticing are non-absorbable, they may need to be surgically removed.
2. Diagnosis via Imaging: While X-rays can sometimes help visualize foreign bodies, they are not the most effective method for identifying sutures, especially if they are made of materials that do not show up clearly on X-rays. An ultrasound or MRI might provide better insight into the presence of stitches, but these methods are generally not routinely used for this purpose. A physical examination by a qualified healthcare professional is often the best way to determine if stitches are still present.
3. Impact on Future Surgery: If you are considering a revision surgery, the presence of unremoved stitches could potentially complicate the procedure. Surgeons typically prefer to operate on clean tissue without foreign materials. If the stitches are causing irritation or inflammation, this could affect the healing process and the final aesthetic outcome of the double eyelid surgery. It’s essential to discuss your concerns with a qualified plastic surgeon or ophthalmologist who specializes in eyelid surgery. They can assess the situation and determine the best course of action.
4. Consultation with a Specialist: Given your concerns, it is advisable to schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon or an ophthalmologist. They can perform a thorough examination of your eyelids, assess the presence of any stitches, and discuss any potential risks associated with leaving them in place. They will also be able to provide guidance on whether any intervention is necessary and how it might affect your eyelid appearance.
5. Potential for Inflammation: If you are experiencing symptoms such as redness, swelling, or pain around the eyelid area, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. These symptoms could indicate an inflammatory response or infection, which may require treatment.
In summary, while unremoved stitches can potentially lead to complications, the best course of action is to consult with a medical professional who can evaluate your specific situation. They will be able to provide personalized advice based on a physical examination and your medical history. If necessary, they can recommend the appropriate steps to address any concerns you have regarding your eyelid surgery and the presence of stitches.
