The radiation exposure from X-rays?

Hello Director Wang: I would like to ask you about the X-rays I had.
Since February, I have had two knee X-rays, one chest X-ray after surgery in March, and after experiencing recurrent lower back pain in April, I had another X-ray at the rehabilitation department which indicated bone spurs.
Six days later, I went to a large hospital's orthopedic department for another X-ray which showed no bone spurs.
In just three months, I have undergone five X-ray examinations.
Is the radiation exposure significant, and could it affect my menstrual cycle or the future health of my children?

Xiao Yu Er, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/25

Dr. Ye Weicheng reply Radiology

Although you received five X-ray exposures over the past three months, the radiation dose from diagnostic X-rays is extremely low.
Therefore, the health effects from radiation exposure are probabilistic in nature, and the probability is very low.
This will not affect your menstrual cycle or the health of future children.

Frequent exposure to X-rays can understandably raise concerns about potential impacts on menstrual cycles and fertility. However, it is essential to understand the nature of the radiation involved and its effects on the body, particularly in relation to reproductive health.

X-rays are a form of ionizing radiation, which means they have enough energy to remove tightly bound electrons from atoms, potentially causing cellular damage. However, the amount of radiation exposure from standard X-ray procedures is relatively low. For instance, a single chest X-ray typically exposes a person to about 0.02 millisieverts (mSv) of radiation, which is significantly lower than the natural background radiation we are exposed to over time. In comparison, a round-trip flight from the U.S. West Coast to Taiwan exposes a person to about 0.09 mSv of radiation.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) states that doses below 100 mSv are unlikely to cause any significant clinical effects. Therefore, the cumulative radiation exposure from five X-ray procedures over a short period, while it may seem considerable, is still likely to be within a safe range for most individuals.
Regarding the menstrual cycle, there is limited evidence to suggest that low-dose radiation from X-rays has a direct impact on menstrual regularity. Factors that typically influence menstrual cycles include hormonal imbalances, stress, lifestyle changes, and underlying health conditions rather than occasional low-dose radiation exposure. If you are experiencing irregularities in your menstrual cycle, it may be more beneficial to explore other potential causes, such as stress or changes in health, rather than attributing them solely to X-ray exposure.

As for fertility, research indicates that low levels of radiation exposure do not significantly affect egg quality or sperm production. The primary concerns regarding radiation and fertility arise with higher doses, such as those associated with radiation therapy for cancer treatment or prolonged exposure to high levels of radiation. In your case, the X-ray procedures you mentioned are unlikely to have any detrimental effects on your fertility or the health of a future pregnancy.

If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle or fertility, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider who can evaluate your overall health, discuss your medical history, and potentially conduct further assessments if necessary. They can provide personalized advice and reassurance based on your specific situation.

In conclusion, while it is wise to be cautious about radiation exposure, the levels associated with standard X-ray procedures are generally considered safe and unlikely to impact menstrual cycles or fertility. If you have ongoing concerns, particularly about your menstrual health or fertility, seeking medical advice is the best course of action.
