Left-sided chest pain?

Last week, I suddenly experienced pain in my left chest, approximately near the heart.
There are no visible abnormalities, and I am currently in the military, making it inconvenient to seek medical attention.
I have to wait at least a week until my leave to go.
What methods can I use for self-assessment? The pain is not significant with light pressure, but it tends to occur suddenly while sitting.

Dr. Yang Wenda reply Pulmonology

Hello: If your chest pain is accompanied by shortness of breath or cold sweats, you should seek medical attention immediately and get a chest X-ray.
If the pain is intermittent and only occurs occasionally, you can wait until your time off to see a doctor.
Best wishes!

More Info

Experiencing left chest pain can be concerning, especially when it is located near the heart. While it is crucial to seek medical attention for any chest pain, especially if it is severe or accompanied by other symptoms, there are some self-assessment tips you can consider while waiting for your opportunity to see a doctor.

Self-Assessment Tips for Left Chest Pain
1. Identify the Nature of the Pain: Take note of the characteristics of your pain. Is it sharp, dull, or aching? Does it feel like pressure or tightness? Understanding the nature of your pain can provide valuable information. For instance, sharp, stabbing pain may suggest a different issue than a dull, persistent ache.

2. Location and Radiation: Pay attention to where the pain is located. Does it stay in one spot, or does it radiate to other areas, such as the arm, shoulder, neck, or back? Pain that radiates can sometimes indicate a more serious condition.

3. Triggers and Relievers: Note what triggers the pain. Does it occur during physical activity, deep breathing, or when you are at rest? If the pain worsens with exertion or deep breaths, it may be more concerning. Conversely, if it improves with rest or changes in position, it may be less serious.

4. Associated Symptoms: Be aware of any accompanying symptoms. These can include shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness, or palpitations. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

5. Physical Examination: You can gently palpate the area around your chest to see if pressing on specific spots causes pain. If pressing on the chest wall elicits pain, it may indicate a musculoskeletal issue rather than a cardiac problem. However, this is not a definitive test.

6. Breathing Patterns: Observe your breathing. If you notice that taking deep breaths exacerbates the pain, it could suggest a pleuritic cause, such as inflammation of the lining of the lungs. Conversely, if your breathing feels shallow and rapid, it may indicate anxiety or distress.

7. Rest and Relaxation: While waiting to see a doctor, try to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate chest pain, so practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation may help.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
While self-assessment can provide some insights, it is crucial to recognize when to seek immediate medical care. If you experience any of the following, do not hesitate to go to the emergency room:
- Severe chest pain that feels like pressure or squeezing
- Pain that radiates to the arm, neck, jaw, or back
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sweating or a feeling of impending doom

Conclusion
While self-assessment can help you gather information about your left chest pain, it is not a substitute for professional medical evaluation. Chest pain can have various causes, ranging from benign musculoskeletal issues to serious cardiac conditions. Given your current situation in the military, it is understandable that accessing medical care may be challenging. However, prioritize your health and seek medical attention as soon as you are able, especially if your symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to chest pain.
