Bowel issues
Hello Doctor: I have had a long-term poor diet, averaging a bowel movement every four days.
Later, I improved my daily diet by eating a lot of vegetables and probiotics or yogurt.
My bowel habits improved to about every two days, but soon I noticed my stools became loose.
After bowel movements, I felt rapid abdominal peristalsis and discomfort.
Then I started experiencing diarrhea, which became watery (golden yellow), so I sought medical attention.
I was prescribed Duspatalin.
After taking one pill, my discomfort improved immediately (initially I had constipation).
A month later, the same situation occurred again, with post-bowel movement discomfort and loose, unformed stools.
I would like to ask the doctor what this situation might be.

Dr. Cai Anshun reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello: It may still be an abnormality in gastrointestinal motility.
It is recommended to seek medical attention for a routine stool examination, and if necessary, the physician will determine whether further endoscopy is required.

Digestive issues can be quite complex, and your experience highlights a common problem many people face when trying to improve their bowel habits. It seems that you have transitioned from constipation to diarrhea, which can be frustrating and uncomfortable. Let's break down the potential causes and solutions for your situation.
Firstly, it's important to understand that the digestive system is sensitive to changes in diet, hydration, and even stress levels. When you initially improved your diet by incorporating more vegetables and probiotics, your bowel movements became more regular, which is a positive change. However, a sudden increase in fiber intake can sometimes lead to loose stools or diarrhea, especially if your body is not used to processing that much fiber at once. This is often referred to as "dietary fiber overload."
The symptoms you described, such as abdominal discomfort and rapid bowel movements after eating, may indicate that your digestive system is reacting to the changes in your diet. The presence of loose stools, especially if they are watery and yellowish, could suggest that your body is not fully absorbing nutrients or that there is an imbalance in your gut flora. This could be due to several factors, including:
1. Dietary Changes: Rapidly increasing fiber intake can lead to gas, bloating, and diarrhea. It's essential to gradually introduce fiber into your diet to allow your digestive system to adjust.
2. Probiotics: While probiotics can be beneficial for gut health, they can also cause temporary digestive upset in some individuals, especially if taken in large quantities. It's advisable to start with a lower dose and gradually increase it.
3. Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), food intolerances, or infections can also cause alternating patterns of constipation and diarrhea. If your symptoms persist, it may be worth discussing these possibilities with a healthcare provider.
4. Hydration: Increased fiber intake requires adequate hydration. If you're not drinking enough water, it can lead to constipation or exacerbate diarrhea.
5. Medications: You mentioned taking "肚倍朗" (likely a digestive aid or medication). While this may help alleviate symptoms, it's crucial to understand its effects and whether it could be contributing to your digestive issues.
To address your current situation, consider the following steps:
- Dietary Adjustments: Continue to consume a balanced diet rich in fiber, but do so gradually. Monitor how your body responds to different foods, and consider keeping a food diary to identify any triggers.
- Hydration: Ensure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day, especially when increasing fiber intake.
- Probiotic Management: If you are taking probiotics, consider reducing the dosage or trying a different strain that may be better suited for your digestive system.
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend tests to rule out any underlying conditions or suggest a tailored treatment plan.
In summary, your experience with digestive issues is not uncommon, and it often requires a careful balance of dietary choices and lifestyle adjustments. By monitoring your symptoms and making gradual changes, you can work towards achieving a healthier digestive system. If problems continue, seeking professional advice will be crucial in finding a long-term solution.
