Eye pain
Hello doctor, this afternoon around 3:30 PM, I suddenly experienced a sharp pain in my left eye.
After about 90 minutes, it hurt again, and now my left eye feels sore, but it's not as painful anymore.
Should I observe it for a while or should I see a doctor right away? Thank you.

Sudden eye pain can be concerning, and it's essential to understand when to observe symptoms and when to seek medical attention. Based on your description of experiencing sudden stabbing pain in your left eye, followed by a lingering soreness, it is advisable to err on the side of caution and consult a healthcare professional, particularly an eye specialist.
There are several potential causes for sudden eye pain, ranging from benign to serious conditions. Some common causes include:
1. Corneal Abrasion: This is a scratch on the surface of the eye, which can cause sharp pain and discomfort. It may occur due to foreign objects, contact lenses, or even rubbing the eye too hard.
2. Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye, this condition can cause redness, irritation, and pain in the eye. It can be caused by infections, allergies, or irritants.
3. Uveitis: This is an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye and can lead to severe pain, sensitivity to light, and vision changes. It often requires prompt medical treatment to prevent complications.
4. Acute Glaucoma: This is a serious condition characterized by a sudden increase in intraocular pressure, leading to severe eye pain, headache, nausea, and vision changes. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.
5. Retinal Detachment: This is a serious condition where the retina pulls away from its normal position. Symptoms may include sudden flashes of light, floaters, and a shadow or curtain over the field of vision, along with pain.
Given that your pain was sudden and has recurred, it is crucial to seek medical attention. An eye care professional can perform a comprehensive examination to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They may use tools like a slit lamp to examine the front of your eye and check for any signs of injury or inflammation.
While waiting for your appointment, here are some general recommendations:
- Avoid Rubbing Your Eye: This can exacerbate any potential injury or irritation.
- Limit Screen Time: If you have been using electronic devices extensively, take breaks to reduce eye strain.
- Use Artificial Tears: If you suspect dryness might be contributing to your discomfort, over-the-counter artificial tears can provide relief.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, such as increased pain, changes in vision, or new symptoms like redness or discharge.
In conclusion, while some eye pain can resolve on its own, sudden and recurrent pain warrants a professional evaluation to rule out serious conditions. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preserving eye health and preventing potential complications. Don't hesitate to reach out to an eye care provider for a thorough examination and appropriate care. Your vision is invaluable, and it's always better to be safe when it comes to eye health.
