Feeling the heartbeat?

Hello, doctor.
For the past two weeks, whenever I sit in a chair, I often feel my heartbeat.
I'm not sure if I'm being overly sensitive or if my heart is beating harder and faster.
However, so far, most of the time when I feel my heartbeat, I haven't felt particularly uncomfortable, except for one instance when I felt a bit short of breath.
Although I don't feel unwell, the sensation of my heartbeat while sitting is somewhat bothersome.
I usually measure my blood pressure when I get up, and my average systolic pressure is around 110, while my diastolic pressure is around 85.
My pulse averages around 85, sometimes exceeding 90.
Is this normal? Should I get checked for the symptoms mentioned above?

Hello, this is what is known as palpitations, which may not necessarily indicate abnormal blood pressure; heart rate is normal.
It is advisable to observe first.

Heart palpitations can be a common experience for many individuals, and they can arise from a variety of causes. Understanding when to seek medical advice is crucial, especially if the palpitations are new, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing noticeable heartbeats, particularly when sitting, which can indeed be concerning.

Firstly, it’s important to clarify what heart palpitations are. They are often described as the sensation of feeling your heart beating, fluttering, or pounding. While they can be benign and related to anxiety, caffeine intake, or physical exertion, they can also indicate underlying heart conditions, especially if they are frequent or associated with other symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, or fainting.

In your case, you mentioned that the palpitations have been occurring primarily when you are seated and that you have experienced a moment of feeling slightly short of breath. While you are not experiencing significant discomfort, the fact that this sensation is bothersome to you is worth noting. Your blood pressure readings appear to be within a normal range, and an average pulse rate of 85 beats per minute is generally considered acceptable, although it can vary based on factors such as activity level, stress, and overall health.

Given your symptoms, here are some considerations regarding when to seek medical advice:
1. Frequency and Duration: If the palpitations are frequent and last for an extended period, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. Occasional palpitations are often benign, but persistent ones warrant further evaluation.

2. Associated Symptoms: You mentioned experiencing a moment of shortness of breath. If this occurs frequently or is accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness, or fainting, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.

3. Underlying Health Conditions: If you have any pre-existing conditions, such as hypertension or heart disease, or if you have a family history of heart problems, it is advisable to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare provider.

4. Lifestyle Factors: Consider any recent changes in your lifestyle that might contribute to palpitations, such as increased caffeine intake, stress, or changes in physical activity. Reducing stimulants and managing stress can sometimes alleviate palpitations.

5. Diagnostic Tests: If you decide to see a doctor, they may recommend tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), a Holter monitor (a portable ECG that records your heart's activity for 24 hours or longer), or an echocardiogram to assess your heart's structure and function.

In summary, while your symptoms may not seem alarming at the moment, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to heart health. If your palpitations persist or worsen, or if you experience any concerning symptoms, I recommend scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can help determine the underlying cause of your palpitations and recommend appropriate management strategies. Remember, early intervention can be key in addressing any potential heart-related issues.
