Feeling a sensation of something stuck in the throat?

Hello doctor, why does it feel like the food I swallow is stuck in my throat? Also, whenever I burp, the food seems to come back into my mouth.
This has been happening recently and it's quite strange.
By the way, I have a bit of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Could you please explain why this is happening? What could be the possible condition?

Hank, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/28

Experiencing the sensation of food feeling stuck in your throat can be quite distressing, especially when compounded by symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a chronic condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to a variety of symptoms, including heartburn, regurgitation, and the sensation of a lump in the throat (often referred to as globus sensation).
When you mention that food feels like it is stuck in your throat, it could be attributed to several factors related to GERD and other potential underlying conditions. One of the primary reasons for this sensation is the inflammation of the esophagus, known as esophagitis, which can occur due to the acidic content from the stomach irritating the esophageal lining. This inflammation can lead to a narrowing of the esophagus, making it feel as though food is getting stuck.

Additionally, the act of swallowing is a complex process that involves the coordination of muscles in the throat and esophagus. If there is any disruption in this coordination, whether due to anxiety, stress, or a physical condition, it can lead to difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or the sensation that food is lodged in the throat. Anxiety and stress can exacerbate GERD symptoms and may contribute to the feeling of food being stuck, as they can cause muscle tension and alter the normal swallowing reflex.

Another possibility is that you may be experiencing a condition known as esophageal motility disorder. This condition affects the contractions of the esophagus, which can lead to difficulty in moving food down into the stomach. Conditions like achalasia or esophageal spasms can present with similar symptoms, where food feels stuck or there is regurgitation of food after eating.

It's also worth noting that certain lifestyle factors can contribute to these sensations. Eating too quickly, consuming large meals, or eating foods that are particularly irritating to the esophagus (such as spicy or acidic foods) can exacerbate GERD symptoms and lead to discomfort. If you find that you are eating on the go or not chewing your food thoroughly, this can also contribute to the sensation of food feeling stuck.

If you are experiencing frequent episodes of food feeling stuck, along with regurgitation, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend diagnostic tests, such as an upper endoscopy or esophageal motility study, to evaluate the function of your esophagus and rule out any serious conditions. Treatment options may include lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and medications to manage GERD symptoms and reduce inflammation in the esophagus.

In summary, the sensation of food feeling stuck in your throat, particularly in the context of GERD, can be attributed to inflammation, motility issues, or even psychological factors. It is crucial to address these symptoms with a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment plan.
