Eye problems

Hello, Dr.
Yan.
I would like to ask you again...
Ever since I started experiencing floaters, I have been very anxious every day.
Now that the floaters have increased, my anxiety has worsened.
I keep searching for information to see if there are any treatment options available.
I never expected the floaters to increase for no reason, which has affected my mood negatively.
Could you please advise me if there are any dietary supplements that contain anthocyanins? Can anthocyanins help reduce the appearance of floaters? I read online that anthocyanins may help prevent the increase of floaters.

Nìmíng, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/04

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear netizens: Anthocyanins are widely found in all deep red, purple, or blue fruits and vegetables, such as mulberries, grapes, blackberries, figs, cherries, beets, eggplants, purple yams, purple sweet potatoes, red cabbage, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, perilla, black (red) rice, and black beans.
Anthocyanins can promote the regeneration of rhodopsin in retinal cells, which may help prevent severe myopia and retinal detachment, as well as enhance vision.
However, there is currently no research indicating whether they can reduce the appearance of floaters.
Wishing you health and safety! Sincerely, Yen Su-Mei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital.

Anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid found in various fruits and vegetables, have garnered attention for their potential health benefits, including effects on eye health. These compounds are responsible for the red, purple, and blue hues in many fruits, such as blueberries, blackberries, and red cabbage. While there is ongoing research into the benefits of anthocyanins, it is essential to clarify their role concerning eye floaters, a common visual phenomenon that many people experience.

Eye floaters are small spots or strands that drift through your field of vision. They are typically caused by changes in the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the eye, as we age. Floaters can be particularly bothersome, leading to anxiety and concern about eye health. While they are generally harmless, an increase in floaters can sometimes indicate underlying issues, such as retinal detachment or other ocular conditions, necessitating a visit to an eye care professional.

Regarding the potential of anthocyanins to reduce or prevent eye floaters, the evidence is not definitive. Some studies suggest that anthocyanins may have antioxidant properties, which can help protect the eyes from oxidative stress and inflammation. This protection could theoretically contribute to overall eye health, but direct evidence linking anthocyanins to a reduction in eye floaters is lacking.
The idea that anthocyanins can prevent the formation of new floaters is based more on their general health benefits rather than specific clinical evidence. While a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly those high in anthocyanins, is beneficial for overall health, including eye health, it should not be viewed as a guaranteed solution for existing floaters.
In terms of managing anxiety related to floaters, it is crucial to focus on overall eye health and regular eye examinations. If you notice a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow in your peripheral vision, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention, as these could be signs of more serious conditions.

For those interested in incorporating anthocyanins into their diet, consider consuming a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables. Supplements are also available, but it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen, especially if you have existing health conditions or are taking medications.

In summary, while anthocyanins may contribute to overall eye health due to their antioxidant properties, there is no conclusive evidence that they can specifically reduce or prevent eye floaters. Maintaining a balanced diet, regular eye check-ups, and managing anxiety through relaxation techniques or counseling can be more effective strategies for dealing with the discomfort associated with floaters. If you have ongoing concerns about your eye health or floaters, it is best to consult with an eye care professional who can provide personalized advice and treatment options.
