Sharp pain on the outer side of the knee?
Hello Doctor: This afternoon, after waking up from my nap, I suddenly experienced sharp pain on the outer side of my left knee when I got up from my chair and started walking.
Prior to this, I had a fracture in my ankle and had not engaged in any intense physical activity.
This pain came on suddenly, and I would like to know what might be the cause and if there are any precautions I should take.
Thank you.

It could be a lateral tendon strain or inflammation, which often occurs after sitting for a long time and then suddenly standing up.
Rest for a while to see if it improves; if the pain persists, then you should consult a physician.

Sudden lateral knee pain can be a concerning symptom, especially when it occurs unexpectedly after a period of inactivity, such as sitting for a while. In your case, the pain in the outer side of your left knee after getting up from a chair could be attributed to several potential causes.
One common reason for lateral knee pain is Iliotibial Band (IT Band) Syndrome. The IT band is a thick band of tissue that runs along the outside of the thigh from the hip to the knee. When this band becomes tight or inflamed, it can cause pain on the outer side of the knee, particularly during activities that involve bending and straightening the knee. However, IT band syndrome typically presents with pain during activities like running or cycling rather than sudden pain after sitting.
Another possibility is a lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury. The LCL is a ligament located on the outer side of the knee that helps stabilize the joint. If this ligament is strained or injured, it can lead to pain on the lateral aspect of the knee, especially during movement. Given that you mentioned a previous ankle fracture, it’s also worth considering that compensatory movements or altered gait patterns during your recovery could have placed additional stress on your knee.
Additionally, muscle strains or tendonitis in the muscles surrounding the knee, such as the quadriceps or hamstrings, could also lead to lateral knee pain. These conditions can arise from sudden movements or changes in activity levels, particularly after a period of inactivity.
Given your history of an ankle fracture and the sudden onset of pain, it’s essential to approach this situation with caution. Here are some precautions and recommendations:
1. Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain. Give your knee time to recover, especially if the pain is severe.
2. Ice: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce swelling and alleviate pain. Aim for 15-20 minutes every few hours.
3. Compression: Using a knee brace or wrap can provide support and help manage swelling.
4. Elevation: Keeping your knee elevated can also help reduce swelling.
5. Gentle Movement: While rest is important, gentle range-of-motion exercises may help maintain flexibility and prevent stiffness. However, avoid any movements that cause pain.
6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the pain persists or worsens, it’s crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an MRI, to assess for any ligament injuries, tendonitis, or other underlying issues.
7. Physical Therapy: If diagnosed with a specific condition, physical therapy may be beneficial. A physical therapist can provide exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve flexibility, which can help prevent future injuries.
In summary, sudden lateral knee pain can stem from various causes, including IT band syndrome, LCL injuries, or muscle strains. Given your recent ankle injury, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely and take appropriate precautions to avoid exacerbating the condition. If the pain does not improve with rest and self-care measures, please consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment plan.
