Car accident injuries?
Hello Doctor, I was in a car accident on January 7th.
After the accident, I went to the hospital and had X-rays taken, which showed no bone issues.
Since then, I have been receiving acupuncture treatment, but my ankle still hurts when pressed.
When I stand up after sitting for a while, I experience pain on the outer side of my knee (the acupuncturist mentioned it might be related to the lateral collateral ligament, but I'm not quite sure).
Since this has been the same situation for over a month, I would like to know if I should continue with acupuncture or see a Western medicine doctor.
If I choose to see a Western doctor, which specialty would be best? Thank you for your response.

Hello! First, let's rule out the possibility of a hematoma; an outpatient ultrasound can diagnose that.
We are also concerned about the possibility of cellulitis, so it is recommended to see a general surgeon.
Take care! Changhua Hospital cares about you!

After a car accident, it is not uncommon to experience lingering pain and discomfort, even if initial X-rays show no fractures. Your symptoms, such as pain in the ankle and knee, suggest that there may be underlying soft tissue injuries that need to be addressed. Given that you have been experiencing these issues for over a month without significant improvement, it may be time to consider seeing a Western medicine specialist.
In your case, the pain in your ankle and the discomfort in your knee could be indicative of several conditions, including ligament sprains, tendonitis, or even issues related to the cartilage in the knee joint. The fact that your acupuncturist mentioned the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) suggests that there might be some instability or strain in that area. While acupuncture can be beneficial for pain management and promoting healing, it may not be sufficient for diagnosing or treating potential structural issues.
When considering a visit to a Western medicine specialist, it would be advisable to consult an orthopedic surgeon or a sports medicine physician. These specialists are well-equipped to evaluate musculoskeletal injuries and can perform a thorough physical examination. They may also recommend imaging studies, such as MRI or ultrasound, to assess soft tissue injuries that X-rays cannot detect. This is particularly important if you have persistent pain and swelling, as these symptoms can indicate a more serious underlying issue.
In addition to evaluating your knee and ankle, the orthopedic specialist can provide you with a tailored treatment plan. This may include physical therapy, which can help strengthen the muscles around the knee and ankle, improve stability, and enhance your range of motion. Physical therapy can also provide you with exercises to alleviate pain and prevent future injuries.
If the orthopedic evaluation reveals significant soft tissue damage, such as a ligament tear, further interventions may be necessary, which could include corticosteroid injections or, in some cases, surgical repair. However, many soft tissue injuries can be effectively managed with conservative treatments, including rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), and rehabilitation exercises.
In summary, given that your symptoms have persisted for over a month and are affecting your daily activities, it is advisable to seek a consultation with an orthopedic specialist. They can provide a comprehensive assessment and guide you on the best course of action for your recovery. While acupuncture can be a valuable complementary treatment, it is essential to ensure that any underlying structural issues are properly diagnosed and treated to prevent long-term complications.
